I have attempted to achieve the middle split several times in my bodyweight journey. From my years of only yoga to treating it as a strength skill to stretching daily before my handstand practice, nothing worked despite staying consistent for even a full year.

About six months ago, I switched my approach to something completely different from what I had done in the past, and I have made more progress and become stronger in this movement than ever before. For the record, I don’t just want a middle split; I want to slide down with control, hold it, and back up.

There are millions of ways to achieve the same thing. So no, I am not saying that yoga doesn’t work for splits (it has for many I know), or that passive stretching is useless (it’s actually very effective). I just want to share what is working for me more than anything I have ever tried.

1. Frequency: I started training on a 5-day rotation for the split. However, my schedule didn’t allow consistent sessions, so I switched to training it ONCE a week on fixed days.

2. Intensity: high as hell. My body needs around a full week of recovery to do the workout again. Literally hard core strength training as far as how fatigued it gets you.

3. Volume: a little warm up. Then 4 sets of active work, and 2 sets of PNF work. Active work focused on strength, and PNF to focus on range. So about 6 sets a week.

At first, I thought there was no way this little work could get me the splits, but it’s definitely leading me there faster than anything I’ve done previously.

Once again, I’m not making this post to suggest that you should only “stretch” once a week for a particular movement. For many, you will need more, and some passive work will likely be beneficial.

This post is intended to share my personal journey and offer a different perspective on flexibility training. I will for sure be exploring this approach with my students that I feel can benefit from.

At the end of the day, if a coach tells you, “THIS IS THE WAY, ” do yourself a favor and find a new coach. I know it can be reassuring to hear that, but our bodies don’t work that way. We make our best guesses based on experience/data, and we adjust as we go based on the persons ability to adapt, because we know there are infinite ways to achieve the same thing —that’s a good coach.

Guys generally dont train flexibility because its "cringe&weird". It wont change untill society starts to treat it like something ordinary, like women gymnastics
