Are you suffering from a pinched nerve problem in the neck, possibly into the shoulder area? I help people with this kind of problem all the time. There are two main exercises that I start people out with, whenever they see me in person for a pinched nerve problem in the neck and shoulder area.

I'm going to detail with you today the top two exercises that I start my clients out with when they have a pinched nerve problem. But before I go into these, just a quick disclaimer. This pinched nerve issue can lead to a lot of other problems, and if it's real serious for you, I highly suggest you go get help immediately. I'll tell you more about this as we go through the exercises. But it's possible that this pinched nerve problem, in the neck and shoulder, can lead to other more serious conditions that people get surgery for a lot of times.

Things like carpal tunnel syndrome in the in the hand or wrist area. You can pinch a nerve up in the neck and the pain can transfer into the wrist and hand, because of the way that the nerves pass into the shoulder and arm. It can also affect rotator cuffs. Some people have rotator cuff tears in their shoulder, and they don't realize that it's related to a pinched nerve problem up in the neck area.

Because there isn't really a whole lot of great diagnostic tools like MRIs and x-rays that can tell us what to do about these neck and shoulder problems where the nerve is pinched. So just be aware of that. If you have other associated symptoms, your pinched nerve problem might be more widespread than you initially think. It may be a good idea to go get some help, or go get some diagnostic imaging, if you think that it's that bad.

If you want to try out these exercises, proceed with caution. They are the best ones to start out with in most circumstances, but not all. So just want to give you that quick disclaimer.

I hope these two exercises were helpful for you. Try them out. If you want, you can download our FREE eBook on the side, that has more tips and advice from neck and shoulder problems, and other options as well.

Hi Doc, I have recurring pinched nerve in my neck which causes radiating nerve pain down my right upper arm, Any time I put my head back as in lying flat on the floor or doing chin tucks starts to send pain into my arm. What to do to release that pinch? If I stand straight up and just move my head horizontally back slightly without looking up, it causes pain immediately. I can't seem to find a way to alleviate it except using dry needling. Any suggestions? BTW I love your videos as you explain better than anyone I've come across. Thank you from South Africa.

Thanks for the videos Dr! I have right middle finger and forearm numbness/tingling. My Dr said the MRI confirmed C7 disc herniation. also C5-C6 disc space narrowing. i'm going to PT. there are very few exerices that don't cause pain. chin retractions and shrugs cause the least amount of pain...but pain does come after 7-10th repetition. does one just stop there, and keep trying to see if the next day can result in another repetition/less pain? or if minimal shrugs and chin retractions cause pain....is it just hopeless and probably need surgery? it was helpful when you explained in a previous video, that years of chiropractic work/and weights hanging off my head while laying on my back....probably caused neck muscles to be too strong which adds compression to my discs....while the shoulder muscles became weak at the same time. looking back, that makes sense and sorry i went to chiro.

Hello Dr, im from El paso as well and ive been suffering from rotator cuff tears, tingling and numbness around the shoulder arm and ive been suffering pinched nerve pain for a year now and i also feel a few knots around the trap muscle i havent been able to do any sort of hard physical activity because i start getting allot of pain and feel very tired. Do you recommend these excercises for someone with similar symptoms? And is cervical traction therapy a good method as well?

Great advice. I have bone spurs between my 6/7 vertebrae do you think these would help or am I most likely a candidate for Injections or surgery. Just as an opinion based on not really knowing what is going on with me personally ? Really getting bad pain and I have an appointment with a pain doc but in the meantime I need a little relief. Either way thanks you for helping others with this serious condition.
