Forrest Gump: Praying for shrimp

What’s happening in this Forrest Gump movie clip?
Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) tells the story of how he developed a profitable shrimping business after surviving Hurricane Carmen aboard their shrimping boat with Lieutenant Dan (Gary Sinise).

What’s the movie Forrest Gump about?
Stupid is as stupid does, says Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks in an Oscar-winning performance) as he discusses his relative level of intelligence with a stranger while waiting for a bus. Despite his sub-normal IQ, Gump leads a truly charmed life, with a ringside seat for many of the most memorable events of the second half of the 20th century. Entirely without trying, Forrest teaches Elvis Presley to dance, becomes a football star, meets John F. Kennedy, serves with honor in Vietnam, meets Lyndon Johnson, speaks at an anti-war rally at the Washington Monument, hangs out with the Yippies, defeats the Chinese national team in table tennis, meets Richard Nixon, discovers the break-in at the Watergate, opens a profitable shrimping business, becomes an original investor in Apple Computers, and decides to run back and forth across the country for several years. Meanwhile, as the remarkable parade of his life goes by, Forrest never forgets Jenny (Robin Wright Penn), the girl he loved as a boy, who makes her own journey through the turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s that is far more troubled than the path Forrest happens upon. Featured alongside Tom Hanks are Sally Field as Forrest's mother, Gary Sinise as his commanding officer in Vietnam, Mykelti Williamson as his ill-fated Army buddy who is familiar with every recipe that involves shrimp, and the special effects artists whose digital magic place Forrest amidst a remarkable array of historical events and people.

Lieutenant Dans story is one of the most beautiful in all movie history. It still gets me so emotional every time

The look of the lady when she sees Fortune magasine and realises it’s not a bullshit story 😂

"He never actually said so, but I think he made his peace with God"

That line always drops me

The ship is called Jenny, because it's always wet, smells like fish and has another man on it.

I love the old lady's reaction. She thought she was getting a entertaining story, turned out it was true.

What nobody realized at 2:20: He had the magazine with him and Lt. Dan right there in his suitcase, that could have proven his story to be true, but he did not even think about bragging. Tells a lot about this movie character.

You know he still never thanked forrest for saving his life. He just brought up the fact that he never has thanked him

The crazy thing is this is actually a thing. In a bad enough storm boats along the shore/in the harbor are often destroyed. Boats that fight it out and brave the weather in open water survive.

Seeing Lt. Dan yelling at God at the top of boat in the middle of a storm while the American flag is waving gotta be one of the most badass scenes ever filmed

Gary was born to play this role. The character of lieutenant Dan inspired him so much that he became actively involved with war veterans and started his own foundation. Forget an Oscar; this man deserves the presidential medal of freedom 🙌❤️

Lt. Dan didn't mean what happened in Vietnam he meant the downward spiral his life was in after going home, being a forgotten veteran and permanently disabled. It's really a touching moment when he shows up at Forrest's wedding with his life together.

Has Got To Be one of the finest motion pictures ever made; a guy overcoming his disabilities and walking us through the baby-boomer perspective of American history. A wonderful musical score by Alan Silvestri

Only just realised now that Lt Dan was not just thanking Forrest for saving his life in Vietnam but also by unknowingly saving him from alcoholism and depression. From this point on Lt Dan is at peace with his life.

I’m a 64 year old man but it always makes me tear up when Lt. Dan says “ Forrest, I never thanked you for saving my life “

"Stupid is as stupid does"
Teaches us a lot about this movie. Forrest never does anything stupid. The entire movie he makes the right moral decisions and puts the people he loves over his material possessions. Lieutenant Dan wanted to die in vietnam, jenny never loved Forrest who always loved her. If stupid is as stupid does, Forrest was the smartest in the whole movie.
