I think Lieutenant Dan smiled because he realized that this was the reason why he was saved by forest. To be able to still appreciate what life has to offer. If forest hadn't saved him he would have missed all these beautiful things

i love that forrest still calling him lieutenant dan. forrest always kept the same respect and admiration since he had met dan. even in the poorest and darkest times of dan. that's why dan is loving forrest so much and caring about him.

This scene is very powerful. It’s like lieutenant Dan is looking at Forrest as if to say “I’m sorry I told you that you ruined my destiny. You actually saved me” and when Jenny says “ITS NICE TO MEET YOU FINALLY” it’s like Dan realized he and forrest have a true bond. A real friendship. And now they’re both happy 😊 And at that moment, they had all found happiness. That’s my take on it ❤️ edit: and watch how Jenny stays back smiling at first like she wanted Forrest and Lt. Dan to have their moment together ❤️❤️❤️
The breath Lt. Dan took and the way he looked at Forrest was like “This is your Jenny. I’m so happy for you” 1:49 “finally” ❤️

Lovely touch with Dan being with an Asian woman in the end (He was sent into Vietnam to fight against them) It really shows how much he has grown as a character and how he has truly found peace and purpose in his life again. Always shows the level of forgiveness he had to have towards himself and others. Beautiful movie

This scene communicates so much with so little dialogue and it’s just beyond beautiful. The look on Dan’s face after Jenny says “nice to meet you finally”. He realizes that Forrest has talked so highly of him. He looks at Forrest with a look of pure admiration and respect and gratitude. He’s there with Susan walking on new titanium legs because Forrest saved his life. He sees Forrest finally with the Jenny he heard so much about. It’s just a wonderful moment of silent acting

I'll always love Lt. Dan and even more because how much he cares for Forrest going back to Vietnam then to when he told that chick not to call him stupid to thanking him, then at his wedding you can see it all in the way he looked at Forrest after greeting Jenny, take to account this is a man who's witness all of Forrest's hard work and seeing the lovable man moat years after years for this "Jenny" who for all he knows ain't worthy of Forrest and he gives Forrest this smile that ask Forrest "Sure about this?" And the way Forrest smiled back so happily and convincingly you can see the smile of relief and just "Alright buddy" he gives Forrest. Loved their friendship.
