Vietnam Basic Training - Forrest Gump

Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, fighting in Vietnam or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But one person Forrest cares about most may be the most difficult to save -- his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright).

Fun Fact: That drill sergeant loved Forrest Gump more than Jenny ever did

His mom, Bubba, and the drill sergeant are the only people who never degrade or talk down to Forrest.

That short pause after Bubba is done means that Forrest was listening the whole time

The drill sergeant character is a good example of “no small parts, only small actors.”

So ironic that the drill sergeant was the only one to tell Forrest how special he was. Lol

"That's... that's about it"
That line just made it for me. He wasn't just rambling, he had an actual list of hundreds of things you can make with shrimp.

I like how everyone dismisses Bubba, but he actually has pretty damn good business acumen. Talking about fuel costs/man power/shrimp haul... Bubba had his shit together.

1:53 I love how they both pause in acknowledgment. It shows that Forrest was listening the entire time and he let Bubba go on because Bubba is so passionate about shrimp. Such a simple scene.

I love the way the drill sergeant yells "GUMP" and walks towards him so menacingly only to compliment him on his gun-assembling skills.

My Dad was a soldier in the Yugoslav army in the 50s. He had a comrade who talked about all the different ways you could serve potato. Dad laughed his head off at the shrimp scene.

"To do whatever you tell me drill sergeant."

You gotta admit that is a pretty damn good answer.

The gun scene is a great example of how humans can have different types of intelligence. While Gump was not gifted IQ wise which would allude to lack of creativity and conceptual skills taught in text books, it was pretty obvious he was physically gifted when it came to more tangible concepts like assembling a weapon and ping pong. We all have something to offer if we apply ourselves. That is an important lesson in life.

That moment when you realize Forrest Gump probably felt most welcomed in his whole Life for being himself, while as an infantry soldier in the U.S. Army.

I like this drill sergeant. He was the only person in the movie to see the potential in Forest and didn’t see him as slow

The drill sergeant is the most chill and wholesome person ever.

The drill sergeant aggressively praising Gump is one of the best examples of “subverting exceptions” I have ever seen.

Normies: Forrest Gump is stupid.
Drill Sergeant: Fucking Genius.

EDIT: Gump should've been in Marine Corps

Legend says Bubba is still telling God what you can do with shrimp.

Things about Forest Gump: He always get dumb luck. He always listens. He's kind and considerate to other. And more importantly he's respectful and loyal.

I love how the drill Sargent just drills into Gump with compliments.

“You are going to be a general someday Gump!”
