Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. LT Dan's courage is unbelievable. He knew in his heart he was on a path of destruction and when Forrest wrote him a letter saying he finally became a shrimp boat captain, aside keeping his word to be Gump's first mate, deep inside, he need to step out and do something else than sitting around and wait for death to take him. It's not easy walking into the unknown, but it's worst to stay where you at surround by hopelessness.

Forrest sent hundreds of letters to Jenny, and she sent them back RTS. Forrest sent one postcard to Lt. Dan, and he immediately showed up ready to help Forrest in any way that he can.

Love this scene Love lieutenant Dan. I mean honestly he is like one of my favorite characters in this movie mainly because he reminds me of my grandpa otto. My grandpa was in the army and he lost his right leg. I'm not sure if it was in basic training or if it was an actual war injury. I never really figured that part out. Just every time I see lieutenant Dan I think of both my grandfathers they both served in the army. One did lose his right leg. But it seemed like to me that they both struggled to overcome so much when it came to the War. Both my grandfathers have been gone one since 1992 and the other one since 1997 I miss them both a lot.

I love their relationship, sometimes you meet someone at war that you don’t really like and they don’t really like you but a brutal honesty between the 2 makes for a serious respect for one another. Then that becomes friendship, and fellowship

I always liked Forest’s reaction when he spots Lt. Dan. It’s just so fxcking genuine. Gets me every time.
