Here is a simple and easy approach you can try the next time you need to help someone with dementia with activities of daily living. Make sure the thing you offer them to hold is soft.

My mom who was not racist in anyone started scream out the N word to anyone including a 7 yr old. I could not take her anyplace, she always cussed before but it got so much worse. 1 day, I spent the whole day, made dinner for us, lovely day. I went upstairs for a few minutes and came down to her screaming about how I never spent time with her, never did anything for her and called my every foul name, worse than any sailor. So much more, claimed I was stealing her money even though she gave my son has Borderline Personalities and he was robbing her blind. She urinated and pooped on my very nice furniture and carpet. She thought it was funny. I had to throw my furniture away including my extra new bed that I gave to her. My whole house stunk. Everyone denied it, until I made them send a couple of hours with her and then they got it. This was 10 yrs ago. I am in the medical world and after my research, I told her Dr and he thought I just wanted an excuse to move her out of my home, until he saw an episode of it. Within 2 weeks we got her into a very nice assisted living place. After she left I had to throw furniture away, bought new ones and carpet got ripped up. It was very expensive. After she left, I started counseling.

This is spot on I work in a dementia specialist home and we use towels and clothes for a lady while assisting her with personal care to help her keep her hands busy as she will tend to slap carers randomly.

Never been hit yet. Great idea. I’ll remember this.

My mom doesn't hit but she will say cuss words. That hurts me more than being physically hit.

Yes, distraction distraction distraction. Sometimes, I strike up a conversation and ask them about their family using names or about something fun that I know they enjoy.

My cousins keep asking if my sister has become violent yet. (Stage 6 Alzheimer's). She's not and I'm dreading it as she's 5ft 10 and bigger than me. Hopefully it's not a given though.

I been cracked a few. Times. My own. Fault. But certain things. U physically cannot avoid. (And one thing your spot on with. Do not approach a Alzheimer’s/ dementia patient (whichever ) my father has Alzheimer’s (unless I physically stop and tell him hey I have to get this food wiped off of your shirt —for example And i walk toward him with my hand-hands out, he’ll try and grab my wrist or slap my hands away . And gets confused like in trying to hurt him. Also I could just be trying to hand goin a drink or something he’ll slap it out of my hand it wil go flying. (It’s tough, he’s gone so far from. Average to not walking very well needing help with just about everything. within 2 years. )

This is a good idea for them to hold something to fiddle with, but she should also be on his other side of him putting his shoe on as she is at risk of him kicking her with his right leg 😮😊

How do you stop the person with dementia picking their nose? She’s made it bleed so many times and it’s an obsession from the time she wakes till she sleeps. We’ve tried gloves but she pulls them off. How do I stop this gross behaviour?

My mom often scratches her face without self consciousness. Is it also a symptom of dementia?
