Height loss with age isn’t inevitable.

In this video, I explain why you experience height loss with age; especially women, who tend to shrink more than men. Let’s also take a look at how to prevent shrinking as you get older, because once you’re several inches shorter it’s too late to reverse.

Well, you’re losing disc space between your vertebrae along with loss of the vertebrae itself.

One big myth is thinking you can grow more bone by drinking more milk. Cows and horses are large animals with sturdy legs and they don’t drink milk after they’re 6 months old! They eat grass. There is no credible study that I could find affirming that drinking milk builds or strengthens bone.

What about calcium? If a postmenopausal woman takes calcium to prevent bone loss, especially calcium carbonate, they increase their risk of a heart attack. You can check out my separate video on this.

When we talk about minerals, that’s just one piece of the puzzle. You need them in addition to vitamins and especially magnesium and boron. Boron especially is essential to prevent osteopenia and osteoporosis. You can get calcium from leafy greens and maybe a little organic grass-fed dairy.

You also need vitamins D3 and K2, fat-soluble vitamins essential to mobilize calcium and magnesium. Eat fatty foods, and expose yourself to sunlight. As you get older, take them as supplements.

Low estrogen may be a cause of losing height, especially for a woman after menopause. Low estrogen can occur because your adrenal glands, which are supposed to back up your ovaries, don’t produce enough estrogen. This can also cause low cortisol, although too much can cause a catabolic effect and break down bone.

Low protein is another cause. You’d be surprised how many people are protein deficient. You need those 8 essential amino acids! Gut issues can cause problems too.

Lack of exercise puts you at risk. Exercise puts beneficial stress on your body, helping to strengthen your bones.

Then there’s growth hormone and a variant called IGF-1, which you make less of as you age. Keep your insulin and blood sugar levels low, as on the keto diet. Get enough sleep and lower your stress. High-intensity interval training boosts growth hormone. But what can produce the most growth hormone is intermittent fasting. It can actually make you, and your bones, younger.

There’s no reason you have to experience height loss with age.

I see this with my father. He was at least 6'5 now maybe 6'3. This is sad because I always literally had to look up to him, but now not any more. It sucks to see your parents getting weaker year by year. Value the time with them, otherwise you'll regret it later.

I’m 68, female and have not lost any height. I was a a vegetarian for years but really felt the need for animal protein a year ago and feel much better now eating good quality meat, eggs and fish with minimal carbs.
I’ve practiced yoga for years, and taught it. I’m always aware of good posture and lengthening the spine.
Here are 2 cues I find useful. Standing up, imagine you have two pigtails that are gently being drawn back, and up. Cue #2. Standing, breathe in deeply through the nose - inhale filling your chest and your belly. Exhale slowly drawing your pubic bone, navel and rib cage BACK. Repeat for a full minute! About 6 times. Stand tall 🙋‍♀️

I'm 57. I've already lost 1 1/2 inches since age 50 due to my past diet of very high sugar, especially chocolate. After doing keto for the last 3 years though, I feel better and have kept off 35 pounds. Never a hot flash either. Thank you Dr. Berg!
