Article 5 cannot be used if a NATO member is attacking...only if they are attacked.

nato article 5 states that in event when a member country would BE attacked, all members have obligation. If a member ATTACKS FIRST, there is no obligation for other countries to join in the war.

I have the most important reason that France is eager to join the war: To be future leader of Europe. The current political/military power leader of Europe is USA, period. But USA is gradually reducing her presence and influence on Europe. So Europe needs new King. Next throne contenders are Germany, France, UK and Poland. But UK left EU. Poland is not major power yet. So it comes down to competition between France and Germany. Germany is leader in the European economy. But due to her WWII karma, she is reluctant to join the war. She has no nuke and weaker than France in military force. France has edge over Germany on the royal load. This war is the best chance that France will take a seat in throne of new leader of Europe.

Why do most people seem to knot know that article 5 only requires that member nations MEET TO DISCUSS what to do if a member is attacked? Am I wrong about this? It does not specify what to do or that anyone is obligated to do what anyone else decides to do.

You realize the Russian military replaced the ak74 with the ak98 in 1998 and then phased the ak98 out in 2012 with the ak12. They don't use the ak74 at all.
