During the winter months I'm a ski salesman...here's a few things from my experience:
- A big part of selling is listening and reacting. You've got to leave room for the customer to personalize what you're selling to what they are looking for. It often works best to paint with broad strokes early...don't be too specific (at the beginning). As you get feedback, you need to adjust on the fly.
- Don't provide too many options. It's important to give options (that have quantifiable differences), but if you give too many they'll be overwhelmed.
- Sometimes sequencing is the key. After talking to a customer I sometimes will know exactly what ski they should be on, but I won't have them demo that ski first. I'll mention the benefits of another ski or two and recommend they start there. The idea is similar to putting someone in a pair of shoes that don't fit their feet, have them walk around in them (they won't be comfortable). Then they'll put on the right shoe and they'll notice how much better it fits. It's the same with skis...or anything really.
- Look for opportunities to save them some money while still maximizing revenue. This involves having a good feel for the person. You can sometimes sell a person an item they weren't even considering buying if you find a way for them to see the deal. I might discount the ski bindings by a substantial percentage, but we're still making money on them (and we're still making a great profit on the skis themselves). It's not the absolute maximum product, but if it's something we've got a high inventory on we need to get it out the door.
- Know your product. Whatever you're selling you've got to be able to talk about every detail involved with it at the drop of a hat (don't bombard the customer with all this though). Again, you've got to personalize the sale. You're just two people talking about this item...each customer will have a different level of knowledge about the item. Find ways to shape the aspects of the product into what they say they're looking for.
- Reinforce the sale. After the sale is still very important. They need to walk out the door confident in having made a smart decision.

I’m 18 and am in the process of setting up a business. I started with 100 and in the past 9 months made just over 2000. It annoys me when I see people at 15 trying to be millionaires because they just don’t understand how difficult it can be.

I’m currently in an inside sales position (B2B) and although I do believe extroversion can help, it’s not particularly necessary. Being more of an introvert & having strong interpersonal communication skills is what’s currently allowing me to succeed.

My 9-5 is sales, but I am a creative at heart. Sales is not easy and adding your creativity can make you stand out. My ability to make people laugh via comedy has helped me be successful in my sales. Also... FIRST!!

Every business struggles with this. I have a drain and sewer business. We are using constant training to help our technicians move beyond turning the wrench on low dollar jobs to looking at themselves as professionals and their services as essential.

"Don`t confuse you ignorance of something important (market) with your moral impurity" -Awesome sentence. Since we all life in this capitalistic society it`s necessary to involve some kind of market, else you won`t be able to life from the art.

My friend Ben is the best salesman I've ever seen. He has a happy no matter what affectation. I'm good friend with him and his brother. The brother and I and his whole family tbh look at him and are baffled as to how he is so happy. He doesn't choose it, seemingly. We've asked him and he's told us he doesn't choose it. So as far as constitution, that's what I see that it takes. The skills came naturally to him, but he has almost a decade of practice now., So he's a real killer.

I also experience that slow and daunting bureaucracy even as an employee in the lower echelons of a large firm, whenever I make proposals. There are just so many goddamn partners who are already swamped with work and don't even have the time to consider them.

I make pottery for people. Most of my sales are people who have met me in person and like me. I’m a friendly extrovert and really funny. That helps a lot. Im not super thick skinned. It helps to see other people as flawed and caught up in their own problems when they lash out. It’s not me. They are just off today.

Sales is about people. If they like you, the chance of buying from you increases dramatically. If you have a product they like, want, or need but they don't like you, they'll go somewhere else. The best salesmen can take 5 nos and still have the customer happy and feeling like they are in control. Sales is what make the world go round. You can produce the best products in the world, but if you don't have a good salesmen to sell it, it'll just collect dust.
