Here’s Why A Gluten-Free Diet Can Become Incredibly Unhealthy

Unless you’ve lived under a rock these past few years, you know “gluten-free” has become a major buzz term. Restaurants proudly offer options like gluten-free bread, and even mainstream supermarkets have whole aisles dedicated to the trend. Nearly everyone has jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon.

I don’t recommend just anyone jumping on it – not at least until you understand a few facts … and here’s why.

My experience going gluten free for the last several weeks has been very positive. Better mood, more energy, clearer thinking, dandruff almost gone, athletes foot nearly gone, less psoriasis and eczema, skin looking better overall, slimming down. Did this at the same time that I drastically cut my sugar intake and removed dairy from my diet, so I don't know how much credit to give gluten free, but I do believe it has helped. Thanks for the video, Dr. Hyman!

Thank you for this INCREDIBLE explanation of gluten free eating Dr Hyman! I'm a celiac and so often when talking with others I hear "oh gluten free options are available everywhere!". And they simply don't understand that gluten free cookies are still cookies! Well said!

Thank you Dr Hyman. I have been eating gluten free for about 6 months. I no longer suffer with heartburn which I have had for many years, and therefore no longer take any medication for it, best thing I ever did.

hi Dr Hyman, Im a holistic health coach. Im so grateful for physicians who stand for health. Ive been a nurse for over 10 yrs and I really embraced Holistic health and nutrition because I just couldnt take big pharma any longer. I wanted to see people getting better, healthier and happier. I was discouraged by what I witnessed as physicians pushed more meds and there was not a focus on nutrition, health, Thank you for all you do😙

Yes!!! I have celiac disease and people often tell me, "oh, being a celiac nowadays is easy because you now have gluten free aisles at the grocery store!" I cringe when I hear these comments because I know that 99% of the products are horrific for my health. I used to simply look at ingredients list and say that if it had 3 or less ingredients in the processed gluten free and organic food that I was ok to ingest it. That's how I justified drinking Zevia cola and Siete grain free tortilla chips. I ate them all of the time because I felt like I had been so deprived from eating fun foods. However, my skin was horrific, I felt absolutely depressed and anxiety-ridden. Those things did not have any nutritional value in them. They didn't serve my body which had already been inflamed for so long. I'm sure eating them every once in a while isn't going to kill you, but why would you eat something that will make you feel worse? I also found a non-gmo bakery that actually has an AMAZING tasting coconut cookies and pumpkin pie that is grainless, sugar free, dairy free and gluten free. I thought it was too good to be true! And I ate them every weekend to treat myself after a long week at work. They were definitely delicious but again, zero nutritional value. I simply used the "grainless, gluten free, non gmo, non dairy, and sugar free" label to justify eating them. Although there were no artificial sweeteners or processed sugar in them, they had other things "natural" to sweeten them with like erythritol and stevia. My stomach always felt a little off after eating them. I didn't get sick. I was able to digest them but I knew that my microbiome had been affected. Dr. Hyman is 100% correct. Stay away from gluten-free food aisle and eat whole foods. It's hard. I'm not going to lie. Especially during the holidays and on special occasions like birthday parties but you aren't going to heal if you give into the food industry's lies.

There is one manufacturer on earth that doesn't have an ulterior motive when manufacturing food for you: mother nature. Eat whole fresh food without bar codes.

I have really enjoyed going Gluten free, soy free, sugar free & dairy free. I have Hypothyroidism & watched you in the Thyroid Secret. I feel much better, have lost around 10 lbs., stopped seeing my western doc and am now seeing a naturopath (who's into the whole body vs. just my symptoms). What a difference. Thanks for the tips on the EWG's site. I do find it hard to buy natural foods because of the craze, it's not easy to find in my area & the prices aren't exactly small. I'll be supporting the community of farmers next. Thanks!

If it doesn't rot or sprout, throw it out!  Thankfully I never got into processed products.  All my food comes from the outside of the supermarket.  What you eat is really the only thing you have total control of in this world.  It has to be your number one priority.  It has to come before everything else.

I could listen to your videos all day long! They are so educational and easy to follow.
I started going gluten free when I started with the IIN program. And soon realized that gluten free means whole foods only, no industrial labeld gluten-free products. It took me weeks to adjust to these changes. Sometimes I have products that contain gluten but very rarely as an exception and it works fine. I barely eat any industrial food anymore. I really notice the difference now that I have gotten to know both sides.

Thank you for this. I have gluten intolerance and was told to go gluten free. I now also have internal candida from the sugar additions. Working full time pushed me to purchase too much off the shelf products. Now I do as much from scratch and plan ahead more than I ever did as you can find hardly anything healthy out or on the shelves, including restaurants and pub food. Time for the industry to change. They are making us sick. Palm oil makes me sick alongside all the geo additives . I have learned so much from you.

gluten is often replaced with potato starch, which raise your sugar higher.
if you give up one grain( ie wheat) your intestines will sensitize to other grains ( ie brown rice, quinoa ).

I'm a woman, 78, next month and I went gluten-free about 3-1/2 yrs ago now.Really knowing from a back test, 48yrs ago-I was allergic to wheat&corn. I took this test trying to find what I was allergic to for Hay Fever.(Funny thing-now that I'm gluten-free, 3yrs. No hay fever) Back then the Dr. just told me to watch it..no big deal, I guess. So after years of wheat toast(Ads telling people to eat wheat bread and I love my toast sooo 2 at breakfast and maybe a sandwich for lunch and maybe a bun at dinner...finally at about 68 my gut says that's enough and I was sick a lot...probable 7-8yrs. trying to find the answer.Till when I decided to watch Dr.Tom O'Bryan's--Gluten Summit-Which is where I believe, I listen to you as one of the speakers. This was my answer!!! And I've been gluten-free every since. Thank you&Dr.Tom and many wonderful speakers, I am very healthy, lost 36lbs. the 1st 8months...and kept it off. Thank you for this great information. I shall be watching out more closely with this new info. Thanks again for all you do --for FREE for us!!!

I'm vegan and gluten free but I don't eat any junk. Only nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, oats, quinoa, brown rice, beans, and legumes. Also cook everything with coconut oil. The only foods I eat that are processed are larabars/simple squares and popcorn from a healthy brand.

Thanks for the info! A couple years ago Drew from Fit2fat2fit showed us medically what happened to his body when he consumed packaged gluten free foods. It was very eye opening.

Hi Mark, I love your channel. I have been diagnosed with Hashimotos. When I realised my doctor just wanted to write a prescription and get me out of her office; I left her practice, found a nutritionist, and started actively working to bring my thyroid antibodies down on my own. I am eating gluten-free/whole foods with the exception of 1 coffee/day and some occasional sugar-free peanut butter. I eat almost no sugar and dairy. I have been doing this for 6 weeks. I have lost 9 kilograms. I have my energy back. I found a new doctor and he seems to be identical to the first one. Almost a waste of time changing doctors. This one told me that selenium does absolutely nothing and that there is no need to take vitamin D (despite my blood tests showing deficiency....) My thyroid medicine is levothyroxine and I am only on a 50mg dose.
