If you were learning the same karate as a five year old you are training at a commercial dojo that only cares about money and selling a uniform technique. As you get older there should be different classes because there are different scenarios and more capabilities of older people in any martial arts.

I used to practice karate, and can kinda confirm. On the mat, we were all equals, no matter the age, gender, views, etc. Despite being small and young, people much older would treat me with respect that sometime even my parents didn't have to me. And I don't mean being super formal, just... treating me like I'm a worthy human being, apologizing if they made a mistake, like them being polite doesn't have to be earned by me first. It was a very nice experience.

I actually fundamentally disagree with the Schrodënger's douchebag thing. The vast and I mean vast majority of times someone says offensive things it is at least intended as a joke if not in joke form. If there is a positive reaction like people laugh then he's not gonna explain its a joke because it's clear everyone understands that. On the other hand if someone gets mad over an offensive joke then explaining that it's just a joke and you don't actually feel that way makes the most sense.
