The 2nd Anglo-Afghan war started in 1878. Afghan Amir Sher Ali refused to accommodate a British envoy in Kabul. This led to war between both countries. General Roberts commanded a large British force in this war. Khyber Pass and many other areas were soon overrun. The British forced the Treaty of Gandamak upon the defeated Afghans. The treaty changed the current Pak-Afghan geography. However, Afghans reacted furiously and killed the British envoy, Louis Cavagnari. This led to another round of hostilities, and the war continued.
