John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan and Andrew Carnegie were the three wealthiest people of the United States in the 19th century. They developed Trust Monopolies in the country. Trusts including Standard Oil dominated the American Economy. Then Theodore Roosevelt, also known as Teddy, broke the Trusts’ monopoly with the help of the Shermin antitrust act. He was called the Trust Buster. This era also saw a political struggle between William Gennings Bryan and William McKinley. Mckinley was supporting the Gold Standard for American currency while Bryan was in favour of the Free Silver Movement that supported both gold and silver currency. Capitalists backed William Mckinley in his bid for the White House. Thus he became President. But after his death in 1901, Theodore Roosevelt became President and overthrew the capitalists’ monopoly.
