History of Afghanistan E01 | Alexander's conquest of Afghanistan | Faisal Warraich
Показать описание
Alexander the Great invaded Afghanistan around 330 BCE after defeating Darius III in the battle of Gaugamela. Darius III was later betrayed by his Afghan governor Bessus who declared himself emperor of the Achaemenid Empire. So Alexander led his forces into modern-day Afghanistan (Bactria) and central Asia (Sogdiana) to punish him. Alexander also tried to build a fort (Alexandria Eschate) on the bank of Syr Darya (Jaxartes). But Afghans and their central Asian allies, including Scythians, resisted his occupation. Their leader, Afghan commander Spitamenes, proved the most formidable opponent to Alexander the Great.
