Great Britain invaded Afghanistan in 1838. It wanted to reinstall Shah Shuja Durrani, a grandson of Ahmad Shah Abdali, as the king of Afghanistan. The British expeditionary force was dubbed the Army of the Indus. The British wanted to oust the then Afghan Emir, Dost Mohammad, and make Afghanistan a buffer state between India and the Tsar Empire of Russia. Maharaja Ranjit Singh denied the British the safe route to invade Afghanistan. However the Khan of Kalat, Mir Mahrab Khan and the Emirs of Sidh allowed them to do so.
