Ahmad Shah Abdali fought the Maratha Empire in the 3rd battle of Panipat in 1761. The Marathas were soundly defeated. Maratha peshwa Balaji Baji Rao lost his son and cousin in this battle. This decisive battle put Punjab in the hands of the Afghans. But this battle started a new struggle for Punjab between Sikhs and Afghans.
