get stronger without moving - part 5

Isometrics are known to improve strength rapidly (think highly targeted, specific strength training). As a result, a lot of people train them with high weight and short hold times (6 seconds is used, but some go as low as 1. Some take breaks but others "pulse" them - think of yanking on a rope repeatedly).

However, while "strength training" like this sounds great, it took me a few years to realize the strength I actually wanted was much more in the 30-second range. While there's obviously transfer between the ranges, this way is more targeted (like getting stronger at what you can do 3-5 reps with will also improve your 9-12 range and vice versa).

This way was less strenuous (allowing me to do more), more stable, and encouraged better form for me. It also transferred well into my daily activities, which usually required more than short holds. Think of carrying a heavy bag across the yard for construction. There are also some potential rehab benefits for joints.

Neither way is necessarily "wrong, " but I just wanted to share the value I found in longer holds. I alternate between short and long holds sometimes. Usually when progress slows in one range, I try the other. This seems to keep things fresh (and motivating, which is nice). It also depends on the position. I've found middle positions to benefit well from longer holds.

Of course, most people will (and should) do dynamic, moving exercises with isometrics. So feel free to factor that in. For example, if you're doing short, intense holds with isometrics, consider a higher rep range with your movements, and vice versa.

Hope this helps. Have a wonderful day!

You got much more jacked since 2023, visibly, but still stand for the same principles. You walk before us with good example, thank you

I'm disabled and just had major surgery. I'm trying to recondition after 8 years of illness with the last 2 or 3 being bedbound. I love how practical this advice is for everyone, not just gym bros.

I’ve been in PT for a few months. While I’ve been watching your videos on and off for many years, it never quite clicked for me until recently how these things can transfer to daily life until I had real experience with it.
My PT has me doing toe yoga. 😂😭
It’s a ridiculous, silly thing, but it really has helped with my balance and re-teaching my ligaments how to move smoothly. Don’t think I’m going to be lifting weights anytime soon, but low and slow is something I’ve been working on.

One can only imagine how many times he politely asked the catto to step out of the frame (and the cat obviously ignoring him) before just beginning to record lmfao

Dude I remember way back when I first saw you start posting videos. To be honest your content changed my outlook on life. You're always so positive and doing what you love to do it made me see challenges as opportunities to improve myself. Thank you for everything!

This is where old man strength comes from. Holding onto something for a long time has much more strength in regards to range of motion. Like imagine holding up something at a specific height or angle strengthens that range.

Coming back to these sorts of videos recently. I'd been getting into exercises for a few years since my almost 4-yr old was born but over the last 2 years I've been having more and more health issues from a heart condition we're still investigating. I can barely take my kiddos for a walk now, I struggle to make dinner, and I feel like years of slow progress is all going to be entirely wasted. Until I remembered you doing videos on just holding still and getting healthier and stronger from it.
Really hoping this can help prevent me from deteriorating too much whilst I find out what's wrong with my heart. I'm only 28, and I feel like with my heart combined with my hypermobility I'm trapped in the body of someone 3x my age. Painful and really depressing. If these videos help me maintain a decent quality of life I will be so, incredibly grateful.
