Heavy compound lifts are to fitness what the blues is to music #personaltrainer #gymworkout

I first learned to lift weights when I was 20 years old. I attended the National Personal Training Institute 6-month intensive. And in the first week, I learned how to squat, deadlift, and bench.

I first started learning to play music at 7 years old. I took lessons in the room next door to my dad’s office. And in the first year, I learned my basic chords, how to pluck and finger (hehe) the notes, and the blues scale.

Looking back, the things in common with these experiences were that in the first few weeks I learned skills that I still practice to this day.

These foundational skills start you on a path of understanding the “language” of each discipline. And over time, you refine the absolute fuck out of them. These become the foundation of HOW you move or play.

After all, the HOW is more important than the WHAT. Yo-yo ma playing a major scale is different than you playing a scale… Tiger woods hitting chip shots is different than you hitting chip shots.

Many people who struggle to move or play up to their potential don’t give these skills the proper attention. And they make a logical mistake…

It must not be the right exercise for them. They need something special! So they try to take an easy way out by finding some overly complicated special solution.

But what they really need is to go back and double down on the basics. Go deeper into everything that goes into them.

At the root of all the music you love is the blues. Rock and roll and hip hop were both influenced by R&B… the B stands for Blues, which also influenced jazz, which influenced a ton of other music. You just can’t get away from it.

This is just like you heavy basic compounds built the foundational strength and movement competence of most of your favorite athletes.
