Perfect Hill Starts In A Manual Car | Learn to drive: Basic skills

Being able to pull away on an uphill gradient is a skill that every driver must master, as there are hills at many junctions. This video will show you two ways of doing a 'hill-start', both with and without using the handbrake.

We’ll also show you what happens if you make the most common mistakes, so you can avoid stalling too often.

Thank you so much for this video!!! I was having major issues earlier today attempting hill starts and kept stalling my car. I got very frustrated and wanted to quit. When I got back home I found this video and watched it a few times. I took a deep breath and went to go try again. I used the tips from this video and successfully got out of my driveway, which is an incline. I then went to find the steepest hills around here where I knew there'd be no traffic to worry about. I was able to successfully start from every hill that I stopped on and did not stall the car once. Thank you again!!!

Learning all the steps, and understanding what each step does, will be intriguing for me. My instructor only taught me to keep the footbrake on, lift the clutch to the biting point, release footbrake, and keep lifting clutch whilst applying gas. Yes, even for hill starts. He didn't teach me the handbrake method, but I can now work on it with my Fiat Punto 60 Torino from 2006.

Failed by test last time so I do refreshers today! My local instructor tell me to take a deep breath and this helps! My instructor bring me to several hills to refresh my memory. When you don’t get enough bite then lift the feet a bit more and you will go. I also practise some junctions/traffic lights on a hill because I am weak at that. I have having my test again in 2 weeks time. Your videos are great aid to me!

Will try this later, although my car has an Eletronic Handbrake which gives him the Hill Start Assist, I still struggle with Hill Starts, your video is helpful and different to the others, because you dont only show what to do, you actually show the common mistakes and I see what mistake im doing, im gonna try on a steep hill with ur tips to see if I find better =) Tks again.

My instructor never taught me the gas before clutch method, so I learned without handbrake and it has been rough when using hire cars. I have found that I find the bite and slam on the gas. I'll try this next time
