The pain of not being able to find a software job is real, and the truth is that looking for a software engineering job is often a lonely and painful journey. In this video, I share the painful experience that I went through during my first software engineering job search in the hope that anybody who's currently struggling to find a software development job will find comfort in the fact that I went through a similar experience.

I got my first software engineering role in the middle of covid. Before that I was a truck driver. To make matters worse I stutter, so interviews were extra tough even though i knew the knowledge I had a tough time verbally demonstrating it. Took me over 500 apps and 10 interviews to get hired. Fast forward to today, I am lead engineer at my company, make great cash and have fang recruiters hitting me up. Keep going. Never give up. If you make enough attempts ONE of them will be successful.

10+ in person interview rejection. Almost run out of money. Struggling to get a SINGLE job.
Stress level rises day by day. My health starts to decline. Rejection after rejection. Just a remember: YOU choose this path. You could have work at McDonalds too. Finally able to get a job in cyber security. If you are going through hell rn keep going.

I was learning to code for 12+ hours a day, sent in over 100+ applications, got rejected for a lot of them, decided to join tech Twitter and started networking and talking to people in the industry and someone saw my grind and recommended me to his CTO and i got my first job and that took 9 months.

Landing your first job is a grind but its possible.

You literally brought tears to my eyes. I'm a backend developer with 2 years of experience who has been laid off during maternity leave, and I'm struggling to find my next job. I can't wait for this horrible job hunt to end.

I'm experiencing this right now. I completed my second bachelor's degree, CS, back in August and I must've applied to over 400ish jobs since then and I've only gotten....4 interviews. It's horrible experience.

Been looking since start of the year. Last week after an interview I was told I'll recieve an offer, then this week they've changed their mind. It's brutal on your emotions. I'm a maths graduate looking for my first job.

You released the video just in time. I graduate next week and while working through my program, I used to think that I have been doing great. I still do I guess, I was proud of what I created during my time as a student for the College or for myself. I have been applying and so far nothing to write home about. I graduate next week and for the first time in a long long time, I am having trouble falling asleep. I'm glad to have my parents since they are super supportive but I can't hate this situation more. I know I am going to remember this for the rest of my life. Goodluck to everyone who is job hunting right now!

I worked for free to land my first non-paid programming job to get experience. A month later I was hired as a paid programmer because I told my manager I needed to take some time off to do job interviews. My manager was like "Wait, let me talk to the boss". That was 25+ years ago before any tech boom. I didn't live in a tech hub city and there weren't many tech jobs. I wish there were 600 jobs for me to apply to. Some of my classmates got job as a tech support. We graduated from one of the top universities in the country but the city didn't have many programming jobs and I didn't want to relocate. There were a few coding jobs with adult entertainment industry (you know, those adult sites need programmers too) but I thought it would be a bad idea ;) I was desperate but not THAT desperate. I am glad I did that non-paid job. I wasn't expecting to get a full time offer from that.

Tech recruiter here. I had really good results, and I was layed off a month ago from a silicon valley company. I'm super depressed because I have shitty offers and rejections. Losing hope, and 2.5 months pregnant. I feel I will never find anything again. I never disrespected my candidates, I was told by them I was the best recruiter they ever had. It's so tough 😔

Got the first interview after 350 - 400 applications and I think I only got it cause I added fake experience. Got rejected in 3-4 interviews with different companies (after additional 50 applications maybe) and then found my first job where I even get paid less than a trainee/intern in my country. Currently, I got 2+ years of experience as a FullStack and still have the same salary. And the interesting part is I live in Canada.

I felt your exact pain. I was given a verbal offer but had to wait 6 weeks for the actual offer letter. 6 weeks of stressing about the million reasons why they might not go through with the offer.

I had 2 interviews at Google. One at graduation of university, I only got past two rounda the second time i got through 4 rounds a year after. Round after round I got my hopes up and ultimately I got the rejection in an Uber home. My heart sank. Now I work as a research assistant at a college. Im having trouble finding even an interview. I just wonfer what would have happened if i didnt fail back then. It really sucks. Anyone going through it I feel for you.

I empathize because I watched the video and experienced the same thing when applying in 2021. I personally feel like there is a gap for sure within our industry for juniors and entry-level positions. I remember feeling so disheartened nearing the time when I got my offers.

while the layoffs made the headline, the hiring freezes are actually inflicting the most pain. There is little to nothing you can do to overcome a hiring freeze. either look elsewhere or wait it out. the fake job postings are skewing over the first option. That together with the fierce competition and challenging interview questions are mentally draining to skew you over the second option.

His math degree absolutely helped him even though he doesn't *feel* that way quote-unquote. The fact that he achieved that spoke for itself to employers and indicated that he could branch out and apply that knowledge to a related field.

Everyone should bring skills like that into SE
