Summary:
According to one 2020 study, spending time in nature which hiking allows you to do, helps to change signals in your brain and promotes a more relaxed state. In this video we share how hiking helps with calorie burn, weight loss and more. Be sure to watch till the very end so you don’t miss a thing. #1. Hiking and calorie burn: As with every form of activity, the number of calories you burn depends on several factors like, your age, weight, gender, the terrain where the activity is taking place and the intensity of the activity. On average a 150-pound individual walking at about 3 mph will burn about 360 calories per hour in a mild terrain, and about 544 in a medium to steep terrain. #2. Hiking vs running: On average a 150-pound female runner running at about 3 mph can burn up to 333 calories in 30 minutes. For a male runner who weighs the same and is running at the same pace, they can burn as much as 374 calories in that same time. This is almost double the number of calories burned when hiking. #3. Hiking vs walking: Walking is another form of exercise that can be compared with hiking. It may not involve terrains as steep as hiking trails and this may explain why hiking tends to burn more calories than walking. On average a 150-pound individual who walks at a pace of 3mph can burn up to 238 calories in an hour. If you do a brisk walk at 4 mph you can burn up to 340 calories in 1 hour. #4. Hiking and weight loss: As already mentioned hiking does burn a good number of calories and this means great potential for weight loss. Bear in mind that this can only happen when you have a good healthy diet to go with it. That said, it may not be sustainable to go hiking every day, therefore if you’re on a weight loss journey and need an activity similar to hiking you can perform, setting the incline of your treadmill to a 5% or higher may give similar results as hiking will. Some other benefits of hiking or walking at an incline include building strength in your lower body which research suggests can help you maintain mobility and avoid injuries as you age. If you’re new to hiking, there are some best practices to follow, to ensure that you perform this activity safely and minimize your risk of injuries. You should wear breathable clothing that will help you stay warm and dry. Be sure to have a map, sun protection, first-aid supplies, a headlamp, a tent or blanket, a knife, materials for starting a fire, a change of clothes, some extra food and water. Having trekking poles are also a great asset when hiking.

She does not talk about the extra calories burnt when carrying a backpack and hiking at high altitudes. This video is uninformed and incomplete.
