As long as you aren’t too upright and aren’t using momentum, barbell rows can be great for building your back.

Both are good just train according to your goal and don't forget to add variations.
Bent over rows : Brace yourself and be strong in a hip hinge . Strength also transfers to deadlift
Chest supported : Less need for stabilizing, can focus more in ROM and lat engagement for better hypertrophy and load heavier weights. Less tension on the lower back and core engagement allowing to put in more reps.
Chose what you prefer or do both

Do both. Bentover rows will make you stronger and are overall more functional. Supported rows will really help isolate the lats and burn them down the rest of the way. Both is honestly your best option here.

He’s not saying either is bad. His facial expression makes it seem like he’s complimenting what he’s seeing without being against what he’s currently doing.

better since you're using more energy towards your back, less stabilizing, movement path of weight is also better

Combination of both worked best for me

Just do both, the added stability demands and involvement of the core and the lower back from the barbell row are pretty useful, not to mention that you could overload it like a bench or a squat and have weight goals with it, meanwhile, add a machine or cable row to target the muscles in an isolated fashion with no demands from other muscles

Been getting into non chest supported movements and I’m really appreciating the core and lower back stability I’m building but of course there are other ways to do that. Good luck out there guys and gals.

Neglecting your lower back which is one of the most common causes of injuries and chronic pain later in life is a great idea. Not idiotic at all. Keep it up.

It's better to do bent over barbell rows if you want to strengthen your core. Overall, both are good

Hey! The bent over row is great just program it with lower back fatigue in mind, the upper back can handle crazy volume so you can even add it on lower body days instead of an rdl for variation or on upper days later in the workout when your upper back is already tired and the weight is limited. If you can’t strict row 185 yet with good technique and an actual bend in your bent row you have no reason to skip the movement
