What quitting alcohol does to your body and mind day by day

IF the pubs look a bit emptier this month that's probably because around nine million Brits are taking part in Dry January.

One in seven (17 per cent) UK adults are estimated to be going alcohol-free for 31 days as the year starts.

Research conducted by Alcohol Change UK, the charity behind the Dry January initiative, revealed 8.8million Britons signed up to the campaign - with the cost-of-living crisis helping to influence their decision.

Alongside this, countless studies have shown links between excessive drinking and cancers, heart failure and diabetes, among other chronic health issues.

For me I would say I got these benefits after the 90 day mark. I was a heavy drinker over ten years. Best thing I ever did for myself. Never plan on getting wasted again

Good for anybody who is quitting. But just know it takes a long time to feel better. It’s not five days it’s not a month. If you’ve been a heavy drinker for a long time it can be years. Don’t let that scare you just think about the amount of time you have drank and it’s still pretty quick. Good luck good for you. It’s worth it. It doesn’t have to mean forever. It doesn’t even have to mean that you can never ever drink at a celebration or something unless you know you can’t and you know who you are but it is one day at a time and one year at a time but even if you slip, doesn’t mean you need to start over. If you get drunk tomorrow, but you’ve been off for a year just snap out of it pay attention to how you feel pay attention to the hangover pay attention to your mental health and then keep moving forward deduct one day don’t just restart. It’s not all or nothing it’s life.

Quitting alcohol gave me better and more frequent bowel movements. I fight the urges by watching videos on the harms and dangers of alcohol consumption and the benefits of stopping alcohol. I already stopped my addiction to the horrible American Diet. I changed my diet over 3 years ago to low carb, no sugar, whole, real foods, minimally processed or unprocessed foods and oils… I lost 50 pounds and have kept it off, but that last 10 or 15 pounds to go from 185 to 170-175 has eluded me. Now I want to fix my addiction to alcohol. At 65 I have been a drinking and way more than I should for over 50 years. I believe if I don’t stop it will be the death of me. I lost an Air Force buddy a couple of years ago because he couldn’t control it. His liver was destroyed and he died alone. I am fortunate enough to be married to a good woman and she makes me want to be better.

I'm at day 20. I'm feeling the physical benefits greatly. Slightly seeing them but ready to really start getting to that point.

On day 15, it’s challenging but I’m taking day by day. I feel better, my skin is glowing extremely bright, and I’ve gotten more rest. Wishing everyone good luck, don’t forget to pray everyday, and never give up . Much love 💪🏽❤️

This depends how much you drink. Some won’t feel energized even 3 weeks into sobriety

Day 5- the chubby chick from the bar gets mad and slashes your tires because you refuse to hit that now that your sober.

This only is noticeable if you drank often before. I had the odd drink 2-3 times per month, so I didn't notice anything after 3, 4, 5....days without alcohol after stopping completely since not having a drink for weeks or months at a time was already normal.
