My now-ex belittled me for years. Eventually, I kept little notepads around the house, and when he would say something demeaning, I would get out my pen and notepad, and start writing it down, asking him to repeat it so I could be sure to get his words exactly right. The divorce was not too far off.

But I ignored them until their voices would trail away because they looked dumb talking to themselves. One day, a girl I didn't even know, walked up to me, rested her arm on my shoulder and told me I was ugly. I just said Thank you.
