he runner’s high is a natural reward for persisting. The runner’s high eliminates pain, and boost pleasure. The core high isn’t endorphins, but endocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids are the chemical that are released when you experience the runner’s high. Endocannabinoids also increase the pleasure we get from social contact. You don’t always feel it as a high, where you on the edge of climax, and you’re loving life. The high is a neuro chemical change that makes us more optimistic and also more open to connecting with others. It mimics the high we get from when we smoke marijuana: the sudden disappearance of worries or stress, a reduction of pain, the showing of time, and a heightening of sense.

Movement influences many different brain chemicals: those that give us energy, alleviate worry, and help us bond with others. It reduces inflammation in the brain, which protects us against depression, anxiety, and loneliness.

Regular exercise also remodels the physical structure of our brain, to make us more receptive to joy and social connection. It makes our brain more resilient to stress. Our physiology seems to be engineered to reward us for movement.

If you are regularly active, you have a different brain and nervous system than people who don’t exercise. You have a brain and nervous system that is more sensitive to pleasure and more resilient to stress. Human beings as individuals and as a species thrive when we are active. Our brains work best when they are in bodies that are active, so get out there and run.

Cool video. Though it would be more accurate to say that Marijuana mimics the high we get from running. That's what those receptors evolved to do.
