This is like cars when doc says turn right to go left

I like to consider myself a bit more experienced now after 4 years of consistent running. Basically you’re going slower to focus on form. Also, you want to gradually build up your aerobic base through steady, long distance runs. Lastly, you want to focus on your speed. Form, then distance, then speed. This is the best advice for new runners imo.

Running slower allows you to feel how you step and adjust your foot placement and builds up muscle memory of running form, it also builds up stamina and leg strength over time which will make running faster easier as you already developed the basics

I love long, slow runs. A good podcast or music playlist, a quick sip of coffee, and *BAM* out running. Early mornings are the best.

Another tip. Master your breath control, your breathing is EVERYTHING when running

For speed- shorter distance, faster pace
For endurance- more mileage, slower pace
These two together get faster long distance

Someone told me don't run for distance run for time. And ever since my brain said okay let's go on a 30 min run instead of a 3 mile run I've been more motivated

So true. People talk about ego lifting but ego running exists too, it’s hard for people to be patient and do those 11+ minute slow runs to build up their base or moderate tempo runs.

As someone who also began running recently, I was told the same by a good friend who was running half marathons every morning at 5 AM. I was unable to run 2 miles at that point. I am now capable of running a solid 6 miles without needing to stop. Slow down, the speed comes with your muscles being comfortable with the weight of your body.

Me Every time "lets run slowly this time"... Then a guy overtakes you... "not today, not today"

I think the concept of aerobic vs anaerobic is very important for people to understand.

Aerobic - means with oxygen. Steady movements that trigger cardio but you aren't dying out there. Slower running will build an aerobic base. Over time you will be able to run at a faster pace without getting exhausted.

Anaerobic - without oxygen. Burpees, sprints, box jumps, etc build this. You are at a lack of breath constantly. If you want explosive power for jumping top speed etc this is the way. You see many top athletes especially in the NFL do this. Tyreek Hill is a great example.

The optimal way to get better at running is to do both imo. Have days of aerobic running and anaerobic running. Aerobic builds that solid base. Anaerobic builds explosiveness. Combine both and you will be much faster and will be able to run longer

Slow and steady pace wins the race. Clocked an 8:46 mile this morning @ 214 lbs. Used to be able to run a 13:36 2 mile in the Army. I’ll get there again and beyond. ❤

Imma have to clear up what people think this is actually saying. It’s not saying simply run slower it’s saying run slower to focus on technique! You absolutely HAVE to run faster to get faster. It’s in every runners programming to have fast days and slow days but for new runners, technique is most important.

This is why..
At 60% of your max heart rate your heart beats the maximum volume of blood to your muscles (it’s stretches the most) after that the heart beat pace just increases. When you run at 60% of MHR the heart will get bigger and will be able to pump more blood=more oxygen = more pyrovate/glucose to your muscles which makes able to run faster. Also the mitochondria’s increase in size, amount and they move to a more beneficial position. The longer (time not KM/miles) you run the better for the mitochondria. That’s what the guy means. But you should not overlook the interval training since that increases the anaerobic system. I won’t explain that here tho, maybe if he makes another video.

At a recent 10K trail race. I easily passed a runner during the first 2K. He blasted past me during the last 2K. Start slow, finish fast.

Everyone who saying it’s for form is wrong. This is zone 2 training and it increases the number of mitochondria in your cells meaning your muscles can produce power more efficiently. It works. Especially when paired with a tempo workouts a la Norwegian 4x4 training.

Tip for track runners: Run hard but don’t slow down each rep. The real work is put in during the 400 workout when you really push the last 2 to stay on pace.
