I recently took this test called the Saboteur Assessment. It’s a quick fun assessment of self-sabotage subtypes. (It’s by positive intelligence. Google it and do it. Then tag me with your top 3 “Saboteurs.”)

My top 3 were: Stickler, Hyper-achiever, and Hyper-rational. Basically this means I’m a perfectionist, who judges their self worth based on external achievement, and values logic over feelings. To be clear, these are also the same qualities that can yield positive return when they aren’t out of balance.

Not surprisingly, a lot of my clients fit similar personality profiles. And they also make a lot of the same mistakes. Perfect form is one of those areas.

The perfectionist wants to make sure to get everything correct. They want to know the right and the wrong way. And this often stalls them out and prevents them from getting exposures. They spend so much time trying to “figure it out” cognitively, that they disrupt their ability to get/implement useful feedback.

The hyper-achiever has very low tolerance for lifting lower weights for longer, having technical flaws, or otherwise struggling. Being behind their expectations is unacceptable. Once again, not getting the reps in (avoidance) prevents having to feel the pain of not achieving the desired outcome.

The hyper-rational has the belief that they can “think” rather than feel their way to perfect form. They use so many cues and get lost in the analysis. They create cognitive noise and lose embodied signal. They become totally disconnected from their bodies.

The irony is that the things that move us closer to “ideal” form are:

1. Lots of exposures and feedback
2. Appropriate load, exercise, and volume selection
3. Unconscious mastery of skills through “feeling”

For anyone with a similar personality profile, the best ways to get perfect form is to tolerate a lot of imperfect form, to stop trying so damn hard to get it right, and to let someone else make the high level decisions for you.

Progress Perfection.

Do the assessment and tag me.
