The Catholic Method of Arguing Explained

Contrary to common opinion, arguing—when done with charity and gentleness—is actually oftentimes an effective way to get to the truth. In this video, Matt Fradd makes the argument for argumentation, while distinguishing it from argumentativeness. In addition to his straightforward logic regarding the matter, he gives biblical support from St. Paul, and you can't argue with that.

Thank you Matt! I'm an 18 year old devout Catholic and I've been fighting for the truth in the secular world starting college now and never afraid of standing up for whats right. Glad to come across your videos and podcast to help me through this growth process with bumps and spiritual warfare. Love what you do man, greeting ls from California.

Great video... I know what you mean! I was raised to call it debating... English call it debating ( how I was raised.).. intelligently and calmly presenting truthful reason. Arguing tends to bring to mind an elevation of temper or gradually getting there. But debating is not about that so I like to call it debating... in college I took debate which is actually a class that many do take and it is very educational.
When parents see two children squabbling they tend to say stop arguing or our parents used to chide us and say stop arguing. But we never were reprimanded for debating ( lol...as we got older!) because it involved a calm and intelligent presentation of facts and reason. God bless!!!

G.K. Chesterton once said, "People argue because they care about the truth."

I think this is so important especially when it comes to arguing about spiritual matters, remembering that a) we're speaking to a dignified person made in God's image and b) we should be arguing with gentleness and charity (and humility). It should never get to a place where one of the parties arguing gets offended or angry, as hard as that might be sometimes. Thank you for another awesome video Matt! Maybe one of your future videos could be arguing for the existance of God or why the Catholic Church is the one, true church #askmattfradd ?

There is a sense of guilt whenever there is an argument and there is a feeling of being sorry afterwards. Because many people get upset and I do not want people to feel that way. Thank you and hope you would teach us how to argue effectively but in a harmonious way.

I agree that it is important to give an argument for the faith, but I think sharing your personal story is really important too! Also, one of my theology professors is really big on conversation rather than arguing or debating because she says that when you are debating, you are stuck on the idea that you are 100% right and might not be willing to fully listen to the person. But if you enter a conversation willing to maybe have your mind changed, you get to understand the other person better, and if you truly are 100% right, your mind still won't be changed, but you had that willingness.

I am growing more in knowledge in the faith, but when it comes to this issue of arguing, I pray for the grace to remain gentle, just like in 1Peter 3:15. Thank you so much for these videos. God bless.

I actually found this video because I was asking why are protestants so argumentative. I was recently discussing the phrase debt vs trespass as it relates to student loan forgiveness with a pastor, in a very respectful way mind you. I was trying to say in the end forgiveness and mercy are encouraged. This was a topic that, in the end, we AGREED on. That's the crazy part. The pastor was very respectful, dismissive, but not disrespectful. A member of her congregation got very angry though and I had to exist the conversation. It caused me to reflect on my interactions with protestants vs Catholics in the past (even before my conversion.) I think you describe it perfectly by saying there is a difference between argumentation and being argumentative.
