No surprise here. A new study shows that eating more protein helps with healthy weight loss and maintaining lean mass. Plus, eating more protein meant a healthier overall diet. Would increasing your protein help you?

We greatly appreciate studies and communications like this! At age 70, with a small frame, I have a BMI of 21.8, and have been able to maintain muscle mass and avoid sarcopenia by eating grass-finished beef, which my husband and I raise on our farm. In 1989, we began learning the art and science of regenerative grazing with our herd of Hereford cattle, a breed that was originally developed in England during the 18th century for efficient grazing. The work requires walking at least 10, 000 steps per day (and sometimes much more) on our western Kentucky farm. We also appreciate the work of registered dietician Diana Rodgers (author of the book Sacred Cow) for helping to spread the word about the benefits of 100 percent grass-finished beef, which not only benefits human health, but also would help to mitigate climate change, build soil health, stop soil erosion, and improve water quality--if only more farmers knew how to do it and were encouraged to do it.

Carefully remaining unmentioned is that the SOURCE of the protein matters...a lot. Animal sources are more bioavailable...easier for the body to use...than plant sources.

I switched to higher protein 2 years ago and I'm fine with it. My success story will appear on Diet Doctor on Monday.

This low protein fad was started by the veggie and vegan mafia. I eat keto and do IF 24-36 hours but to avoid sugar cravings I greatly increase protein intake as I believe whilst a Keto diet is good the low moderate protein intake is not suffcient. I do resistance training, running and cycling as well and to avoid eating sugar and carbs is is important to keep protein high not only for energy for maintaining muscle strength and stamina. Eat eggs.

Don’t forget that protein PLUS exercise is needed to build muscle mass. I tend to favor resistance bands in my clinic

I lost 20% of my body weight in one year on a low carb diet. I don't like the fat so I'm eating more protein and veggies

The longer low carb diet I follow, the more I realize that protein intake acts lot of more rolls in my body healthy building than fat intake . Thanks for your sharing.

Somewhere I saw 1g protein per pound at your ideal weight (which may be a sketchy concept.) I can estimate that for myself, though, and it's about 27% more protein than 1.5g for my current mass in kilos. There's a subtle difference in those calculations conceptually. With the one, it's a better estimate of the lean mass you wish to support. With the other, it suggests you need to eat more protein if you have more fat. I find that odd.

PS: I've also seen protein requirements expressed in lean mass, presumably meaning that's the tissue you want to maintain, and that protein doesn't matter for maintaining fat (on the balance.) I'm sure it matters somewhat, as lipoprotein is the fat package, so it would not be lean mass, but would support fat. The best measure probably IS an estimated ideal body weight, including the acceptable amount of fat to keep.

Since I've been consuming more meat, fish, eggs, butter, cheese, vegetables and green salads, my Type Two Diabetes and Cholesterol are much better. I was afraid to eat especially cheese, butter and eggs before but not any longer! I’ve noticed when I DIDN'T consumed these food, my body made more LDL and less HDL Cholesterol!
When my doctor got my fasting blood test results just 2 months ago he told me that my Diabetes and Cholesterol are better and to keep doing exactly what I'm doing!
Btw, I've never had a problem with weight; I'm always a slender individual; my problem is gaining weight but I know it's because of my diet.

And I still haven't had any response from DD on the implications of higher protein intake for those of us living with cancer. Never any mention of this. I wonder why

what amino acids were part of these 10 food records/person? :) With that trend, they still can't exactly study the upper limit if it causes cancer or kidney damage. Maybe Dr. Fung is wrong about the affects for the kidneys. The protein that's processed could combine with carbohydrates to really spike the insulin and cause the kidney damage. Did they take it only after or with exercise? :)

Yet again the evidence speaks for itself. I will share this to my 6K strong keto group.

Do you think it's possible to consume too much protein, provided you're an otherwise healthy individual on a low carb diet? Does the answer change if you're trying to stay in ketosis?
