Like some of the other commentors, this music has been in my life since age 10. My late father was one of the musicians who contributed to this project under the wing of Johnny Green who at the time was also the concert master for the LA Philharmonic. What many don't realize is this soundtrack was a marriage of the top musicians from both the LA Philharmonic and the top jazz and big band session players in LA. They were the top guns and the creme de la creme of the music industry at the time. Beside my dad (Jack Dumont) alto saxophone, Uan Racie trumpet, Shelly Manne drums, Pete Condol Trumpet, Milt Holland percussion, Gene Cipriano saxophone just to name a few. My dad told me that the sessions musicianship was so top notch, that they laid down the prologue track in one take. Johnny Green had told the musicians that was the best sight reading of music that complex that he ever experienced. There was some real comradery of musicians that for the rest of their lives they wore it like a badge of honor. One of the best recordings of music ever.

I'm 64 years old, and this is the real original. I remember listening to it over and over when I was 7 years old. This is the one!!! Thank you for posting.

"Cool" is the best ever thing I've ever heard; the rythm, the lyrics; the tension, the dance. Perfect; tu pas mettre un poil de cul!

Nothing today comes within even the orbit of this perfection. The writing, composing, performance is incomparable. We won’t hear or experience the likes of this type of talent and craft again.

I remember when I got gifted a cd player at six years old. I got a bunch of disks along side, and one of these was the west side story soundtrack, which I started listening too after having watched the movie at 8. I remember liking the movie, but I absolutely fell *in love* with it after I listened to the soundtrack a few times. The music was so good, and I absolutely loved songs that had a story too them, (fast worfard 5 years now I’m a theater kid who listens to heathers, six, and other musicals on the daily).

I remember even listening to some songs before I’d go skiing to pump myself up!
Honestly remains one of my top three favorite musicals of all time. Not only was the choreography amazing, but the songs are wonderful.
And I just loved acting out the scenes while listening to the songs on my disk player, my favs were America and Officer Krupke.

Anygays that’s all I had to say :D

In grade 10, my art teacher used to play this soundtrack regularly. I particularly loved the dance music at the gym.

Really wonderful clean reproduction of one of the best Hollywood soundstage recordings of all time. And a particular pleasure hearing crystal clear playback of my late father, Milt Holland, on percussion including bongos (note his crisp and lively rolls! He and Jack Costanza are probably recognizable on recordings for their rolls along with lively interpretations. The recordings even include the dancer's footfalls especially on "Dance at the Gym" and "America" (not to be confused with percussion which was surely right on - the dancers' clapping and footfalls are not always super accurate, obviously).

Wow, this really does have everything! And I'm so glad for the chance to hear Natalie Wood's own voice. It's mostly dialogue ("I feel pretty" and the "Final, " but in the latter, I realize - once again - just what a powerful performance she gives (her poignant fragments of "Somewhere" are heart-rending). Thank you so much for posting this.
