Haunting opening with the aerial view.with the faraway echo whistling..feels so much like NYC and only NYC..can feel the grit, It is a scene you feel...not only see. The most perfect NYC depiction!

Movie's great, but you can't beat this opening. Brilliant, perfect.

The fact that the first 10 minutes of this film is minimal dialogue, the choreography of this is so fantastic that it was easy to understand the situation and the story. Love this movie so much

The greatest opening of any musical, ever. The aerial shots of the city with the echoing whistles create a tense and chilling atmosphere, almost as if setting up a big dramatic crime thriller, which only intensifies as we zoom in on the urban playground. Then, with the simple act of snapping fingers, everything changes. You know instantly, at that moment, that you’re in for something unlike anything else in cinema.

this prologue and "the Quintet" were two of the best scenes ever introduced to us in the history of cinema. I am now 76 years old. a non Latino. the sharks were easily my favorite. George Chakiris was the coolest of them all. we were in 8th grade. even every macho boy wanted to learn how to dance after this.

The guy chasing after the ball ( in the green shirt), his name is Kit Culkan, and he’s Macaulay Culkin’s father ( just discovered this last year)

I absolutely love the opening shots of this movie. To me, its amazing seeing how New York (and the United States for that matter) was back then and how it is now. Great movie overall.

I like how the Jets see no point in messing with the clean-cut basketball players, and simply toss the ball back. However, as they walk away, all the Jets turn and give them that look that says "Hey boys, just remember who runs this neighborhood!"

And in time, where the lower left side of Manhattan is, is where The World Trade Center Towers would be built! West Side Story came out in 1961 and work on The WTC Towers wouldn’t begin to be built until 1966
