Pause it as 0:50 ... My mom is in the blue dress just under the right of the basketball net. And her sister, my aunt, is in the orange dress next to her!

Rita Moreno was so charismatic and vivacious in her role as Anita. I realize she was a “supporting” member of the cast, but in this dance scene with all crowd of dancers, I can not keep my eyes 👀 off her! It’s almost like a spot light 💡 is shining on her in this crowd!

Can you imagine the time spent to create this scene in terms of rehearsals to practice and learn the dances, then the filming? 😮

One of my favorite scenes in the entire movie. Every moment of it is just brilliant. 👏👏

As much as I enjoyed the Spielberg remake, this choreography can never be beaten. Especially when it’s recreated from the original 50’s Broadway staging by Jereme Robbins!

RIP Tony Mordente (1935 - 2024) who played Action and choreographed this epic sequence. 👍
Please compare 2:33 and 3:01: Same moment twice 😉

I worked at the James Alex Summer Theater in Dayton Ohio in 1961 when Rita appeared in DAMN YANKEES. She was delightful, energetic and friendly with everyone. A true professional.

There was a lot I liked about the remake but Spielberg massively dropped the ball on this part. The wide shot of Tony and Maria seeing each other across the blurred room is a cinematic icon. The dreamlike interlude, the background dancers, the purposefully hypnotic dialogue.. it conveys the moment perfectly. In Spielberg's, they just go behind the bleachers. Tony doesn't even dance, he just watches Maria dance like he doesn't even care.

I'm not yet learning how to joke that way.
I think now I never will.
