I was about 13 when I first saw this film and this scene confused me: "Wait, they just met yesterday and they're already so in love they're having an impromptu wedding ceremony? . . . Okay." It wasn't until after the events of the rumble, when everything was falling apart, that it clicked for me and I realized "West Side Story" was modern musical "Romeo and Juliet". This song is just gorgeous and perfectly captures the emotions of soul mates meeting and recognizing each other. Just lovely. Gods willing, we'll all be so fortunate as to find that someone. This scene succeeds precisely because it is not set inside a church. It speaks of the humble simplicity of their dream and the hopeless impossibility of having that dream realised. Without stating it, the set design is telling their story in a visual way. The power of this scene is that their love has transformed the place into a church: the architecture and cinematography create the impression of a stained glass lit cathedral, the mannequins become their wedding guests, and observe who they're kneeling towards. We, the audience, assume the role of the Priest! They are asking US to bless their sacred union! What a sublime piece of art! The new version has other things to offer, but I don't think it reached this level of depth and imagination. In the words of Miranda Priestly, "A wedding. In a church. Groundbreaking."

My father passed a few days after I saw this on Turner Classic Movies. My parents were married 60 years and my mom was devastated. A few years later, I heard this at a wedding and burst into tears at the line, "Even death won't part us now."

I loved the 2021 version too but the way the original handles the song makes more sense. It is like they can see their actual wedding. It was not like that in the new one. But both are amazing. West Side Story is a classic!

I was not alive when this came out but listened to the soundtrack almost everyday. Have the DVD and have seen the play 3 times. My boys know I have emotional triggers because I luv luv. I have to prepare before rewatching the movie.

I’ve been in love with West Side Story for years now. I never get tired of watching the movie/musical. I am getting married next year, and I remembered this scene. Hearing the song again makes me cry, as it reminds me of my fiancé. Being in love, feels like watching this movie for the first time all over again. I will be playing this song at my wedding.
