ANITA
A boy like that
Who'd kill your brother
Forget that boy
And find another
One of your own kind
Stick to your own kind
A boy like that
Will give you sorrow
You'll meet another boy tomorrow
One of your own kind
Stick to your own kind
A boy who kills cannot love
A boy who kills has no heart
And he's the boy
Who gets your love
And gets your heart
Very smart, Maria, very smart
A boy like that
Wants one thing only
And when he's done
He'll leave you lonely
He'll murder your love
He murdered mine
Just wait and see
Just wait Maria
Just wait and see
MARIA
Oh no Anita, no
Anita no
It isn't true, not for me
It's true for you, not for me
I hear your words
And in my head
I know they're smart
But my heart, Anita
But my heart
Knows they're wrong
You should know better
You were in love
Or so you said
You should know better
I have a love and it's all that I have
Right or wrong, what else can I do?
I love him, I'm his
And everything he is
I am too
I have a love, and it's all that I need
Right or wrong, and he needs me too
I love him, we're one
There's nothing to be done
Not a thing I can do
But hold him and hold him forever
Be with him now, tomorrow
And all of my life
MARIA & ANITA
When love comes so strong
There is no right or wrong
Your love is your life

i love when anita says “a boy who kills cannot love” bernardo killed riff and anita has no idea. one of the best and more subtle examples of hate birthing hate in the film.

I think Anita is the wisest and most kind person in whole this story. Everytime I watch this sean, I cry at the end. poor Anita.

This scene. This is why Rita Moreno won an Oscar!

Rita could've carried the whole movie by herself and her talents

I’m never not offended for Anita when Maria is like “you were in love...Or So YoU sAiD”.

Like....bitch, what.

As a latino, I want to see this movie remade with real latino actors and singers. Thank God Rita Moreno, the only latina in this movie, walked away with an Oscar for this movie.

Rita Moreno will always keep me loyal to the original. She is untouchable. No one will ever come close. As a proud latina, her presence, her depth and her performance still and will always speak endless volumes!

Anita is one badass, kind and forgiving woman I would be so resentful if I were in her position. This song always makes me cry.

Anita when she was talking about the boy killing she is talking about Maria's brother too

Rita Moreno had trouble hitting the low notes in this song and so was dubbed either in part or for the whole thing. She said she was unhappy with the dub because her original rendition was so angry it was practically snarling at points, which you can tell from her mouth movements, while the dub was a bit too showy and pretty for her tastes.

the tears streaming down anita’s face by the end of the song always get me

See what always broke my heart more than anything was Bernardo dying and Anita in mourning. Anita truly loved Bernardo and Bernardo loved her. She wanted what was best for Maria and the fact that she was willing to help Maria go off with Tony after knowing what she did, speaks volumes to who she was as a person. I really wish we could have seen more of Bernardo and Anita before he died.

I was never a fan of Maria. She was just to young and naive and the fact she forgave Tony immediately after she found out he murdered her brother. Anita is by far my favorite character in the entire musical

When I was younger I was sympathetic with Maria. Now I'm older I'm more sympathetic with Anita.

The only person who suffers in this whole film is Anita. She's probably known Bernardo a long time, they were probably on their way to being married (Or having a baby. In which case they would have had to be married, given the time this show is set in. Single Mothers were seen as some sort of Pariah not like nowadays when it's practically the norm) and she fled Puerto Rico to be with him.

Maria wasn't in love with Tony. Just as Juliet wasn't in love with Romeo - It was infatuation, lust. Call it whatever, but it wasn't Love

It's pretty difficult to make it through this scene without becoming emotional. That's why it's a classic.

I think every person in the U.S. should be required to watch this. We are all one. We need to put aside all these THINGS that separate us and concentrate on rebuilding our country with love, respect, tolerance, and really listening to those who think otherwise from our individual point of view. We are more alike than different. We need to find our common ground. Mostly, we need to learn to respect each other again and be civil to one another. Love to all.

Leonard Bernstein's song were astounding. The soundtrack for this is just superb! And the song "A Boy Like That" has all the menace written into the orchestration that one could expect in someone warning someone else to "stay away from him."

I love how the character of Anita has two Oscars now.

Watching this movie now that I am 20 years older than i was when i first saw it, I see this scene as so beautiful. Two women, both at different stages of life and love, coming together. You cant help who you fall in love with, neither Tony nor Bernardo were "perfect" men, they were both in gangs, both murdered at least one person in their lives up to this point. Your love is your love and when it comes to human emotion, you feel how you feel, right or wrong.
