RIFF
Boy, boy, crazy boy,
Get cool, boy!
Got a rocket in your pocket,
Keep coolly cool, boy!
Don't get hot,
'Cause man, you got
Some high times ahead.
Take it slow and Daddy-O,
You can live it up and die in bed!

Boy, boy, crazy boy!
Stay loose, boy!
Breeze it, buzz it, easy does it.
Turn off the juice, boy!
Go man, go,
But not like a yo-yo schoolboy.
Just play it cool, boy,
Real cool!

The set, music, & choreography, all comes together in magnificent perfection! Wonder who's still enjoying this in 2024?

I think it's amazing how well this holds up after 55 years.

Placing Cool after the rumble was a BRILLIANT choice in this 1961 film. So much dramatic tension. The song itself sounds insane...and these guys are going insane.

I wonder what it would be like if the gangs today had choreographed dance offs instead of shootings.

West Side Story- greatest dance film ever. Period. I don't care what anyone says. No other musical has so successfully captured such epic sequences. This, Mambo, America. Cinematic WSS all the

Anybody else amazed at how well Ice handles the situation? I mean, Riff was so charismatic, a natural leader, but then he dies and Ice takes his place and manages to get everyone under control when they are badly (and with reason) freaking out

Whoever thought to change the songs is brilliant. The first half of the movie has a much lighter tone, which Gee Officer Krumpke fits in better, in my opinion. The energy in this song and situation after the rumble and Riff's death flow so perfectly. These guys have all this anger inside them that they don't know what to do with; just "be cool". Also this choreography is NUTS. Probably the best choreography I've seen in any movie.

Can you imagine seeing this in the cinema when it was first released? It's still sharp today, 63 years later. In 1961 it must have felt otherworldly.

This is probably the most dynamic dancing segment ever filmed. Incredible.

At 2:50 just imagine that coming after you in a dark alley.

I love the placement of “Cool” in the film way better than in the play. The song makes sense right after the death of Riff rather than putting “Officer Krupke” there.

I love the choreo for the 3 women. The way their individual movement folds in to each other's, it's beautiful.

This whole production was near-flawless. Great direction, photography and editing. Jerome Robbins' choreography is genius and big kudos to the performers. This piece is a very difficult dance.

I feel bad for the kid who played Baby John, because in the filming of this scene he was sick, I believe with walking pneumonia, and he actually collapsed in the middle of the scene.  If you watch his face, you can tell he was sick.  Poor baby <3

This is one of my favorites scenes in the entire movie. I remember reading somewhere that they shot this scene in one take. Meaning that the entire sequence was shot nonstop. If so that is pretty remarkable. Despite some of the jazzy language in the movie, it still holds up very well today. This is what classics should be, Memorable and thoroughly entertaining. This movie is both. Can we really say that about productions that are made today? Great stuff here.

This song is so embedded into popular culture it’s easy to overlook how absolutely bananas it is, in the best possible way. “An atonal jazz fugue in a mainstream musical? Sure!”

Bernstein's score is absolute, unmitigated musical genius.
