Just knowing that there are other people in the world is enough for me. You are never truly alone and if you want can always party up. I enjoy doing stuff on my own in real life, so this seems natural in an MMO. There's stuff you can get done alone in life, quite alot. But there are things you'll need friends or other people for. That's what I love about MMORPGs.

Guild Wars 2 is the BEST! Don't be put off by the fact that it's so old. That just means you have YEARS of content to play through. Plus we have the nicest community and a mega-awesome wiki to help out. Hope to see you there!

Thats why i like guild wars 2. You can just follow a group around and play without even talking. Same with eso

Great list with just the right caveats to make it clear what you are getting yourself in for. I play these games almost exclusively solo with the exception of the auto grouping open world encounters. For me, I play solo because I like to absorb the story and lore and play at my own pace, but it is nice to FEEL like you are in a world that is actually alive. I like SEEING other players and knowing they are there sharing the world with me, but I can still do my own thing. I ran a WOW guild with over 200 players (not characters... players) and that eventually became more work than fun and broke me of all desire to play with others. So solo I go and I am very happy for it.
I have played a good bit of SWTOR and I LOVED the story quests (I played mostly when it first came out). That one I can vouch for myself is SUPER solo friendly. It is sad to hear they simplified the content too much, but I still think it is worth a play as you said.

Thank you for explaining WHY people play MMOs solo. Far too many times in game forums and other places, you always have THAT person who rants, "Why play an MMO and not just go play a single player game?!?" I really hate that. You explained WHY in a very articulate manner. I am the type of player who isn't a game hopper, I prefer to play a single game for months or years at a time... something you cannot do with a single player game. However, the downside of your video, you should mention WHICH of these support controllers and which do not. That is the reason I cannot play SWTOR or WOW, because they don't offer controller support. I play on PC but with controller, since I play on the couch, it isn't feasible to play with KB/M.

I hate the M in MMO that being multiplayer. Just give me MORPG All solo baby. People suck.

One note on ESO. A lot of solo players are mount collectors. ESO makes it near impossible to work toward or even buy a cool mount you see in the game. That is because they have 5 basic mounts. A Wolf, A Cat, A bear, A horse, and A Frog. Each season, or month, or something, these 5 but with a new look become 'available'. I say available, But here's the rub. Say they are doing a fire theme, and you love the fire bear. You have to buy loot boxes, which can rarely drop a mount. But not your choice of the 5. Even if a mount drops, it may be the frog, the horse, you could go broke trying for a specific one. Also, if you're out in the world and see someone on... say an epic frost looking Cat, you have no way to quest toward or buy one. That was in the 3 months ago loot box. Maybe it will will come around next year, when you can have a chance to get a chance to get that particular mount again.
TLDR: see a cool mount, most likely no way to earn or buy it.

It's been years that my friends got too busy with real life to get gaming, but I kept at Guild Wars 2 and had tons of fun (and met new people) even alone, getting lost exploring and running after everything randomly. 100% agree that many aspects of the game are very solo-friendly!

It is because some people don't care about playing with others but just their presence. Knowing real people are around without any obligation or judgment of who you really are.

I would recommend Lord of the Rings Online. Its one of the most beautiful mmos out there and often overlooked by people. Absolutely tons of solo content and the most book accurate portrayal of Midde earth of any video game.

The thing I've not yet seen in other MMO's I've tried is HOW gw2 handles group activities just on the maps, you can join in AND your contribution is counted toward the event itself AND you get your own loot, no sharing and no competing. The map 'meta' are great fun and there are other smaller event chains on most of the other open world maps that you can just join in on, get xp for the event succeeding and everyone can get rewards from kills and open chests. If the event succeeds for you it succeeds for everyone who contributed and the event chain continues if there is one, for everyone on that map. Same with nodes for materials, everyone has their own loot from them so you aren't ever depriving someone if you hit up that rich iron node or whatever. Some of the events are huge, require multiple groups of people co-ordinating across the maps and reward everyone with a bunch of chests to open that they all can open. So you can do "solo" stuff all day but you always feel like you're kind of in a group anyway on any map bc anything you do to progress any of the little events that pop up everywhere is rewarded to you.

I'd like to see a video for "Best MMOs to make new friends in" personally. I feel like its rather easy to find enjoyable solo MMOs, its more difficult to find enjoyable MMOs for multiplayer.

Played every game here except New World. For me GW2 & FF14 are tied for best solo experience

I mainly play my mmo’s solo. Been playing GW2 since launch. Recently I discovered genshin impact. While technically not an mmo but single player, it still feels like an mmo to me (due to size and quests).

agreed, i play solo 90% of the time in MMO, i used to love grouped content back in early 2000s like Ragnarok Online and FFXI, but as a i grow older and have more real life activities / work, sometimes doing a solo progression in an MMO is such a relaxing time

I have been playing ESO since day 1, and i never even touch a trial, it's because i just play the quest and enjoying the stories and lore, ESO probably has one of the best quest stories in an MMO

My wife and I play MMOs "solo" for story line and world exploration. We are both business professionals who still enjoy gaming so we don't have time for guild events or raids. I'm very happy with the trend to focus on solo play and story line. We have played many of the existing MMOs and moved on when the content got boring, grind based or PvP focused. Today, it is hard to justify staying in a boring MMO even if it is F2P. You still feel like you are wasting time if not money.

Wish GW2 was on console. Just got a console back after losing everything in my house fire. Don't have the extra money to replace anything else since I'm having to rebuild. Gaming is my escape from reality.
