Playing an mmo solo is sort of like living in a big city when you’re not very social. It’s less lonely to be surrounded by others even if you’re alone together.

its like running a marathon, you can do it at any point you want, it is an equal achievement no matter when and where you do it, but we all come together to challenge ourselves, noone is running for you but it feels nicer knowing people are running alongside you

"I'm more comfortable when I'm alone. But being alone is lonely. So MMOs were a way for me to be alone but not lonely."
Recovery of an MMO Junkie said it best.

I played Elder Scrolls Online almost entirely on my own to like Champion Level 500. Had tons of fun making a solo build. I just enjoyed exploring the world of the Elder Scrolls by myself. Not that I actively avoided people, but I never joined a guild and ran dungeons and the like with a consistent group of people. Josh said exactly what I was feeling when he brought up how you're just doing your own thing, minding your own business, and you see someone run across the same area you're in and they're also doing their own thing and you have a moment of connection. It's a strange thing, but I enjoy it. c:

But no other single-player rpg has FFXIV's story, or SWTOR's stories, and on and on.

I play many mmos solo to play their stories because it's the only place those stories exist. I'm not playing those games for a social experience.

People existing in that world doesn't matter. If there was an offline way of playing those stories, I would, and not bother with mmos.

Just having the sight of other people going through the same things does enhance things quite a bit
Doesn't even have to be in an MMORPG, it can be link how souls games occasionally you see a phantom of a person playing the game around you in your world while you're also going through doing your own thing

Enjoying a MMO solo yet appreciating the other people playing it I've seen described as playing _"Alone, Together"._ Knowing there's other people doing things in game helps makes the game feel lively but you're not forced to group with anyone. Sometimes if I play a game without many friendly NPC's I get discouraged from playing cause the game feels so barren, the RPG Outward comes to mind when I think of games devoid of life.

I love singleplayer games and mmo's right now i only play ffxiv, but basically i don't care if i see other people or "friends" online i just do my things that i want to, say hi if i do a dungeon then later a take care, and next thing on my list.

There's a lot of events that the community do in ffxiv but i'm like "that's nice" and continue doing my things.

few days ago i had a thougt, what is so appealing in mmo games, and my best take would be something similiar to all those isekai/reincarnation anime.... you arrive in new world, go to first adventurers guild and become an adventurer... there are others like you, but you don't interact with them, but you know they are adventureres just like you, and there are npcs in town that have nothing in common with you

so that adventurers guild gives you a feeling of place that you belong to, while offline games just gives you npcs that doesn''t mean anything to you, in mmo you're part of the world, where in singleplayer you're just a lonesome hero unveiling his story

It's a very interesting discussion, but does not line up with my experiences at all. I play a lot of MMOs, not because I want to see people or interact with others, but because I love action RPGs mechanically but hate making choices and am not hurried with getting to the story. Most single player ARPGs put a huge focus on story and player choice when I just want to go do all the side content.

*Me with mental health issues and autism*
Yeah can't possibly be a reason for wanting to ignore people. Why play an MMO to ignore people?
PEOPLE ARE NOT NICE, but I do like to play games.

SW:TOR and The Secret World are pretty good rpgs as solo.

There’s a difference between being a young adult, having spare time & lots of friend connections, irl or online, to be able to schedule playing MMOs together

Then becoming a full time adult who can barely find 3-4 hours a week of free time to ‘maybe’ play a video game

That video of him reacting to his past video was so good. Josh was wise then but is even wiser now. Love how eloquently he can explain stuff like this.

Idk why to me its comforting to play mmorpgs but not need to make friends. I like knowing that theres community but im an introvert and very shy so the attachment of making a friend makes me uncomfortable lol I play FF14 and the choices to play solo most of it but allow me opportunity to do things in groups and experience the community in places like Limsa is fun. I have fun doing dungeons with ppl or with npcs. I recently levelled from sprout to....idk not having a sprout, so to me everything is new and exciting. This doesnt mean that i dont enjoy playing regular rpgs but i find it fun to play mmos like this too.

I have social anxiety, it is VERY hard for me to interact with people, but I love MMO's and love just standing on Limsa waiting for my dps queue to pop up. If an MMO makes it obligatory to interact with people in order to complete is contents, it is a game I won't be able to play, so I'm very happy that "solo" MMOs exist.

I enjoy single player games for different reasons thab mmos, for one I can relax knowing I wont upset anyone or run into a person I have qualms with, two I can enjoy an experience at my own pace.

Mmos I like because i can interact with other players not that I always do, but the fact that I can and sometimes do makes it feel more exciting because i want friends.
