What's your favorite F2P MMO?

The fact that it's 2024 and the game selection is the same as five years ago is wild.

The biggest problem with Guild Wars 2 is that the free to play part has limits that no one ever mentions in their YouTube videos yet make it sound completely free base game and can pay for expansions.Let me tell you as someone who has played since 2012 and seen all the changes and have the expansions but also made a free account just to REALLY see the limitations they are pretty impactful. You have only 2 bag slots and can't use most of the trading post to get what paid players take for granted such as bigger games and armor. Also you are limited where you can go until certain levels that paid players don't have such as not being able to get to Lion's Arch until level 35 and not able to do any WvW until level 60. The base game is fully explorable and playable but the bag space is the BIGGEST hinderance to that. At least Anet finally changed it so that free players can use map chat to ask questions now even though they still can't use whispers to guild recruiters who map hop as free to play players can only whisper within their same map. They can whisper outside of map only if mutual friends which means they have to have had friended you back but there is no notification to tell them that you friended them in the first place. They only know if they check the friends list and click followers. Also no gliding unless you buy the first expansion and mount is a limited 10 hour trial and becomes available at level 10 and after the hours are used up you have no more mount until you buy an expansion (2nd expansion but now 1st and 2nd are sold together so that is better). I am not going to go into all the other limitations as they are not as impactful. Oh and they can't use the drinkable guild buffs if they do manage to get into a guild and go to guild hall. NOW because anyone gives me any HATE I obviously LOVE the game since I Have been playing for 11 years but I have seen way too many disappointed free players that I feel it is important for this all to be mentioned. Especially when including games like Guild Wars 2 in Free games and Free to Play game lists. I think if players knew before going in what the limits are they would not be disappointed as the game offers so much for free! The REAL Free that Anet advertises is Free Base WITH the purchase of Expansion. But True Free of the base game itself is NOT like the original Free game but with limits. Too many free players keep asking "How can I access my mount or glider?"

Here's one I keep close to my heart and I never hear anyone talking about: DC Universe Online. It's defenetely not perfect, has a lot of flaws, like most games in the list, but I find it REALLY fun to play. It has the most absurd customizations that I have ever seen in any game, the gameplay is fast and challenging, also all the quests are voiced. Might not be for everyone, but I love it. If you like MMOs and superheros, just give it a try!

I would like to add an honorable mention to City of Heroes. Homecoming has unofficially been hosting City of Heroes since NCSoft closed it down some years ago. However, just a few days ago, NCSoft officially granted Homecoming that license. So it's back, officially.

Nice video! With Star Wars: The Old Republic there is more than meets the eye. It is a F2P MMORPG in some way, but you are quite limited in the stuff you can do. There are some conveniences, like the money you can have, the XP you are gaining, but there are a couple of things that are maybe a inconvenience. Like you cannot equip purple gear that you receive. According to some sources it is harder to get those, but as soon as you jump into flashpoint (dungeon) you will most likely get at least one purple piece of gear, which you cannot equip. You can also only receive mail (and not sent), no trade possibility, level cap of 60 (80 is max.) etc. As soon as you spent €5 or $5 in the game, or you have subbed once, you will get preferred status, which will make things a bit easier. But overall, if you are dedicated on playing this game, a subscription is definitely required to do the later content, get to max. level, etc.

I went through your lists for F2P MMOs, and a couple of them got left out, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis and City of Heroes: Homecoming.
The first is F2P friendly where the micro-transactions are mainly cosmetics and conveniences along side the optional subscription (also basically conveniences that is very low cost), PSO2:NGS also has an option to play the previous game in the series Phantasy Star Online 2 as a DLC with ability to bounce your characters between the games on top of being cross platform. CoH on the other hand is 100% free when it was resurrected in 2019 after the original serves were shut down back in 2012, all the old pay walls were removed when the game was brought back allowing players to fully build their characters and run all content. Both of these games don't have the standard tank, DPS, and healer classes, instead they have their own systems that have different combinations to fit varied play-styles.

Great video! A small spelling error on the Path of Exile section.

I've been watching your videos since around Summerset came out for ESO. Thanks for keep putting out top tier videos.

Would be nice if these videos featured mostly gameplay instead of cinematics which don't at all convey what the game is like

Correct me if im wrong, last time i played Wizard101 its not exactly free to play, cause the base game its way too short and 90% if not more its behind a paywall.

at this point you can "somewhat" include Black Desert as an honorable mention as a F2P (though mostly free2enjoy for me at least :P) game since more than half of the year it's discounted as low as a singular dollar and mostly during winter you can get the game for free lol

There’s one that’s mostly known by the French/spanish community but I also know there’s a strong English community of players, it’s called Dofus it’s a free to play turn based mmorpg I’ve been playing it since my childhood and that game is just so good imo !

STO is VASTLY underrated. If you like traditional MMOs play it. If you like EVE and want a watered down space version, play it. If you like Star Trek, play it. It is VERY fun.

Petition for Lucky Ghost to actually play or look further into LOTRO so that he has more to say about the game. 😅 Although, if he's tried the game before and quit, I recommend waiting until the Spring to the Winter quarter of this year up to 2025 at the latest. :3 The same goes to other players who had tried it previously and are waiting for certain technical improvements.

That said, LOTRO is a solid, albeit older-looking, title with hundreds of hours of content for free and is regularly updated.

Great vid' LuckyGhost, thank you! With so many options to get lost in. I highly recommend playing through the story lines of all the class stories in SWTOR. GW2, FFXIV, POE all feel pretty modern. I've yet to play Genshin, and the most fun I had long ago in Neverwinter online was oddly enough running through one of the player made stories from the board (I don't know if that still exists?) Just trying to offer a bit of personal input from time spent. What have been some of your favorite times from the list everyone?

Pushing that F2P MMO Definition. I guess at least you didn't list Micrsoft Solitaire!

LOTRO is a really good game for Tolkien fans, and even in it's dated way there is a lot of beauty in it. Sometimes when I log in I just go for a horse ride and take in the sights. For me it was always a more casual game, but they keep dropping level cap increases so I would always feel left behind. When Minas Tirith came out, a place I was looking forward too, the then 32 bit client caused lots of crashes and I haven't really been able to get back into the game since. I would still recommend it all that said.

SWTOR is in such a weird place right now. This is my "sweaty" game, and sadly that is about all I do in it anymore. I feel that the devs have taken some of the wrong lessons and have really killed some of the original vibe of the game by pushing story from a potentially Co-op experience to being all but impossible to play with a friend. Their most recent expansion, Legacy of the Sith was meager and was also supposed to be part of a yearlong 10th Anniversary celebration that never materialized. LOTS, besides being not much more than a normal story update, also became very buggy and grindy. Only a handful of my plethora of alts have been leveled up, and even less and gone any further in the story then needed to hit level cap. They also paired down abilities in a pretty unpopular way and made gearing super confusing.

STO I think also is a great game for Star Trek fans and is a fun casual game. Space combat is fun, if maybe a bit basic compared to some games, ground can be a bit They have regular event that allow you to earn most of the best stuff in game for free if you have some patience, and there is a strong builds community on Reddit that can help you make a really high DPS build on the cheap as a F2P player. They also have a lot of voice acting from actors that were on the shows.
