YES! "Gaslighting" should not be used as a simple synonym for "lying." "Gaslighting" means what David says it means here, and it's very specific. Therefore, the claims "I'm being gaslit, " or "we're being gaslit" are senseless. Being gaslit means you're unaware of the manipulation. You could say, "You're trying to gaslight me."

The term "gaslighting" comes from the 1044 movie, "Gaslight, " starring Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. Boyer, the evil husband, manipulates his wife, Bergman, into believing that she is going insane.

The term gaslighting is still meaningful but perhaps it needs to be qualified, perhaps with deliberate or unconscious?
I have found it very helpful to have this term to describe that kind of bullshit that does actually happen often with many motivations from just avoiding losing an argument to much more nefarious intentions.
