Sometimes you won't have access to a barbell, but you really want to deadlift... that's where this comes in handy :-)

7 years ago and it's the best example video I found. Know why? Because its 2 minutes, straight and to the point. I don't need a 15 minute video explaining this, well done Scott!! Thank you sir!

This video is a great memento of what YouTube fitness used to be. No BS, no sponsors, no patreon, just a video of people trying to make other people’s life better. It’s also crazy to see Scott that young.

See... instead of 15 minutes of waffling like some other videos, you showed me what I needed to see in under 2 minutes. Thank you.

Im happy knowing that it's doable with dumbells. I don't want to do the deadlift in the gym so I'll do it at home with my dumbbells instead. I feel more capable of focusing on my form rather than having anxiety of doing it in front of the buffs in the gym. Thanks scott

dumbbell deadlift uses emphasis on the back to lift with bells a little infront of you, the squat uses emphasis on the legs to lift, bells placed directly by your sides or hips.

I agree that this is a form of dead lift. Try it out. Do this exercise yourself with the dumbbells placed in the same position has shown in this video. Then place the dumbbells at your sides has you would with suitcase squats and you can tell that a different set of muscle group are activated. I still consider myself a beginner and work out at home alone in my apparment with dumbbells and this is how I safely do deadlifts without someone there to spot or coach my form. I understand its not what alot of people think is a conventional deadlift but you still get your posterior chain working.

Thanks for the video. I just started weight training again. This time I am just doing everything at home so dumbbells are all I have. It's nice to know that I can pretty do any exercise with just dumbbells and don't need expensive equipment. From the research I have done, dumbbells do a better job with building stabilizer muscles too.

Best thing about Scott videos is they are short and to the point. These days every youtuber body builder acts like he has some kind of PHD in Science. 12 minutes of quoting Research papers and 17 seconds of actual exercise.

1:21 release excess pressure from air brakes complete.
haha seriously though, great video. Regardless of whether or not this is a squat/deadlift- it's an excellent fully body move :) Thank you for the form tips!

How many times do you think this guy's heard "bless you!" at the gym?

Agree with you. Performing this it felt more like a squat. Other YouTube vids have a different motion from this for dumbbell deadlift.

Great breakdown of the dumbbell deadlift technique. I've been struggling with my form, and this really helped clarify things for me.

I see people debating if this is a squat or deadlift, squatting or hinging pattern, etc; I ultimately think the Dumbbell deadlift is a bit of both movement patterns. Very similar to a Trap Bar Deadlift and a one arm dumbbell deadlift is also similar. It combines both of the mechanics. And most of the time when your picking up things off the ground in real life like mechanics, brick layers, carpentry workers, lumber jacks and even when you move furniture you most of the time combine both movements to get the job done. You hardly ever are presented with a positioning in terms of real life lifting where you are isolatively pure hinging like a romanian deadlift or pure squatting like a goblet squat. So why not train a movement that focuses being a hybrid of a squat and a deadlift rather than one or the other? Go with minimalist training and do Dumbbell Deadlifts and Dumbbell Clean and Presses for a complete workout with a finite amount of movements.

I had a friend who never did deadlifts on barbells. Rather, he would take a heavy dumbbell, tie his towel to it, and lift it up from the ground in front of him with two hands in deadlift form. I always thought it was more practical for real life situations, and also, he could wrap his hands in the towel and not worry about losing his grip. Same went for bent over rows, Romanians, etc...

@zXGeo4 I sure can! I have been practicing it a lot myself and have more insight to give on the exercise now as well :)
