Depression can be a serious ailment, especially if the person does not feel supported. You can help by knowing the right ways to be supportive and offer assistance.

Step 1: Offer support
Offer support and friendship to the individual and be there for them when they need advice or just to talk.

Tip
One of the most important things you can do for a depressed person is be there for them, unconditionally, and let them know they can count on you.

Step 2: Suggest evaluation
Suggest that the individual be evaluated and treated by a health care professional. Help them make and keep the appointment.

Step 3: Educate yourself
Educate yourself on the individual’s condition and what to expect during their treatment and recovery. You can find many helpful resources using the internet.

Step 4: Support their treatment plan
Support the individual’s treatment plan by helping them schedule appointments and follow medication schedules. Encourage them to stick to their plan.

Step 5: Encourage and support positive activities
Encourage and support activities with friends, family, colleagues, and support groups. Encourage hobbies.

Step 6: Allow individual to make decisions
Allow them to make decisions about social activities, like which movies to see or which restaurants to visit. This helps build confidence and self-esteem.

Step 7: Give positive feedback
Give the individual positive feedback and compliments on their progress as often as possible.

Step 8: Feed your own soul
Feed your own soul by taking time for yourself and your own interests.

You can't always just keep someone happy if they have problems and stuff.
If someone suffers from a serious depression, you'll need more then being with them and trying to cheer them up.

be patient, and if it's someone that you really care about, let him/her know that it won't matter what happens, you'll always be there whenever needed. trust me, it helps a lot :)

@ashthegreat I'm not talking about just being sad and dealing with hardship, I'm talking about DEPRESSION. There's a huge difference.

I have depression. It seems both of my "friends" really show no interest in helping me, and my mom and brother don't like talking about it. I'm trying to learn how to help myself.

What is the track used for this video? And would i be able to use this as an intro to a song in my band? That would be wicked.

@WeThePeopleRleaders Looks like you have lived the life that I'm living now. And i understand you completely. But I've understood how to deal with it. It is like a challenge for me now to overcome and grow spiritually. I'm happy to hear that it will end once I will move. Take care

Easiest way to get over depression is to do what you really want to do, and not what your used to do. I usually get my depression if I am doing the same thing everyday, over and over

@rimlanin Actually it is a neurological syndrome where brain fails to initiate reward response. A person with chronic depression can be easily diagnosed with an autopsy of the brain. This is because the structure of the brain is drastically altered in depressed individuals. Also note that not all people with depression will feel sad, some might even feel happy or euphoric (a type of mania or bipolar). 25% of people with clinical depression will kill themselves, that is not just "lazy".

Any suggestions?? Family mem w/ DBP symptoms. Isolates self, packs up & leaves, returns, isolates again. Any attempt to suggest seeking help is met with off the chart stubbornness and spite/contempt. Also, my pleas for her to get help are labeled as "Preaching" or "Talking down to" or "I don't need an analyst". I worry I'm just feeding attention seeking, but I feel I have to put aside my fears and at least try. HELP

@oldgregg93 Well it's not physical. I really believe that people with mental illnesses (not talking about depression) should be treated with normal attention, cause locking them up in a room won't bring them back to real life. They will be forced to live in they own world that they have created.

what if you've done all these steps (the depressed person) but there not getting any better. What if they start making you feel depressed. What if they never let you have anytime for yourself. How do you tell them you do not wish to carry on with the relationship you've had or have.

Here in Sweden we have free healthcare. I just found out that you guys in the states actually have to pay for therapy and such. How many suicides do you have per year? I cant imagine how it must feel like to not being able to afford psychiatric help.

Yeah, I agree. Drugs can help sometimes though.
But in the end you'll just have to change yourself, I know.
