I literally started crying at the last one, I have always been feeling worthless because I’m not a professional and can’t help my best friend through their struggle. I‘ve always been a person that tends to develop way too much empathy to the point where their problems decide and become my life...I really need to work on that I think

I think another good point is to not mention the person's weight. Even if you might think it's positive, it can have a negative affect on the person with the eating disorder.

I only have one criticism. Please don't say you can't love someone else until you love yourself. People with depression, eating disorders, mental health issues are fully capable of loving another person even if they're not there yet with themselves.

I remember when I told a friend about my eating disorder before I went into recovery and he took it upon himself to research! That always blows my mind whenever I think about it, but it also made me feel loved. I've been in recovery for two years now!

I absolutely love how you say "we & us" so that we never feel alone. Thank you for always being there and educating us, Kati ❤

One of my close friends was diagnosed with 2 health/eating disorders. Her doctors suggested to have a friend who she trusts to help her through school, I’m gonna ask the principle for the same schedule and seating arrangements so I could be with her and help with panic attacks along with making sure she eats at lunch and all that. I’m not gonna get into detail but I’m more than happy to take this responsibility to help my friend with this challenging battle. It’s gonna be good for both of us:)

I'm so glad that there's so many here that's willing to help a friend in need. But remember, your mental health matters too. Before you try to heal someone, ask them if they are willing to give up the things that makes them sick.

Hi, I am Sarah from Saudi Arabia and I have been watching your videos lately and they're very informative. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart, since you have been a great help to me. We lack professional treatment centers in our country (in the Middle East region in general) /it's not really accepted in society if you went to one or took any prescription medication. I show many signs of borderline and depression as well. I am taking things day by day since I don't have any other option, and again your videos have been a great help. Thank you.

How do you handle the guilt associated with parents who get emotional when they are concerned? I shut down when my mother is in tears because I can't handle my own emotions plus hers. You're awesome Kati- love the amazing contribution you are making to so many lives!

One of the biggest advice : NEVER EVER comments on someone’s weight, plate, food ect… please don’t say things like « oh I’m glad you’re eating again » or « wow you gained weight I’m proud of you », just keep the « I’m proud of you », not « you seem healthier » or « Now that all of this is behind you » because most of the time, it’s not, even if we gained weight we’re still struggling, the thoughts remains and sometimes it’s even worse mentally after weight gain because we lose or sense of control that felt like a safe place.

Where was this video a couple of months ago? :P
One of my friends suffered from an eating disorder (she under-ate and overexercised) and I did a ton of research in order to help her.
The fifth tip is the most important. I was so frustrated all the time because I wanted to help her but she didn't want to get the help cause she wasn't "bad enough" (which we know is bullshit).
At some point I started working on my binge eating with my therapist and I was going through tough times. Things she told me were effecting me really badly. So I just told her that I can't handle it right now (her numbers and food choices) and I'm not talking to her about it, B-U-T if she's ready to start recovery I'm more than willing to help her get everything that she needs and she should tell me.

My friend just died after 35 years of struggle. She had all kinds of help and didn’t want it.
It’s heartbreaking!

my friend came out and told me she’s anorexic and wanted help confronting her girlfriend so she could be supported by her and i’m so glad she chose to talk to ME over anyone else because i had bulimia but even still i’m struggling to think about how i would want people to treat me and the correct things to say to her to be supportive with an eating disorder since i haven’t really been bulimic in ages. this video helped a lot, thanks! i’m just really worried about her since she seems really tired and out of it, she sits next to me at lunch and she hasn’t eaten anything except her milk carton

I have been diagnosed with anorexia like 2 years ago, now I’m weight restored but mentally I’m definitely not there, I’m struggling a lot with depression and stuff. And now, one of my best friend got diagnosed with an Ed too, and god, I don’t know how to act ? I mean, I should now how I would have liked to be helped but I don’t know what to say, I just feel so helpless in front of her, I let her know I’m here for her and stuff but I don’t know what to do…
I would like to push her trough recovery but I know how hard it is to hear someone saying that to you…
I just don’t want her to go trough the same things as I did, to suffer in the same way.

Thanks a bunch! This is super helpful. Could you do one on self harm as well? I think that one is super difficult to know what to do to help someone who self harms.
