Yo it's incredible that modern medicine is capable of doing this!! I'm pretty sure scientists are working on ways to grow your own tissue to help repair this kind of thing - medicine in the future is gonna be crazyyyy

That’s actually tilapia skin! (I believe) It’s used to ease serious burns and promote quicker healing. It’s replaced often but once the treatment is done with, *then* they proceed with skin grafts if necessary.

My father got trampled on by a herd of cattle back in 2014, & he was wearing shorts. Their hooves ripped apart both his legs from the knee down, he spent a week in ICU (with other injuries too), & 3 weeks having a number of surgeries having skin grafts. His legs will never look the same again, he can’t expose them to the sun anymore (higher risk of skin cancer in those areas), & he gets the odd infection in them as his skin is thinner on his legs / if he’s on his legs a lot they can swell - but you know what, not only is he lucky to be alive, he’s lucky we now have modern medicine, because (not that many years back either!) they’d have considered amputation - wounds like that just don’t heal. Lucky guy.

Voiceover in video: “how do you feel the pain in your leg if your leg got cut off?”
It’s called “Phantom Limb Syndrome.” It’s when you feel some type of sensation (such as pain, an itch, etc) from an amputated body part due to stimulation to the nerve that was connected to the amputated area. That stimulation goes to the part of the brain that is in connected to that amputated body part, and consciously tells you that your amputated body part is exhibiting some given sensation.

I had a mesh graft surgery on my legs. The worst part was the muscle/nerve spasms. Felt like little bugs crawling 🥴

Skin grafts can also be done by using pig skin! My brother got burned really bad by oil a few years ago and they used pig skin for his grafts

The look varies tremendously from another to patient. A little bitty skin graft might not be noticable at all but when you end up with deep wounds like this that have obviously involved massive reconstruction it will leave a major scar. I had a small graft from my thigh to my stomach to cover an area that had been chemically burned by my own stomach acid leaking around my feeding tube onto my skin. My skin was literally falling off and dying and we had to move my tube, fix my intestine, and graft some skin over the are. It healed incredibly and looks really natural which was interesting because I had a disorder that causes really severe, incorrect scarring. It's really great and I'm glad people are able to do the grafts or use fish skins!! (Those fish skin grafts are insanely cool if you haven't seen them)

This is so cool. I had skin grafts for burns over my whole back and shoulder when I was 6, but I never knew what it looked like till now.

Im a burn victim, and it happed a few years ago when i was like 11, my mom said i didnt have to have a skin graft if i dodnt want to, so i said no and ive never regretted it, also broke my leg recently and had to get plates and screws near my growth plate, so I couldn’t refuse that surgery haha, ill have a gnarly scar that will be the only reason ill start to wear shorts

I've had this on my feet. I got dragged by a car at 14 and burned my shoes off from the road. Burned the skin off my feet. Hardest part about it is..they would wrap my feet wet let it dry then rip them off my feet. Over and over..it was hell but a necessary evil. This was the 80s I don't know how they do it now

During college, I shadowed a burn surgeon (premed). The OR there is so different from most ORs as they keep temperatures high for the patient’s comfort when their skin comes off. The healthcare professionals have to wear way more protective equipment too due to more blood and because it’s so hot, it STINKS SO BAD. I was fascinated but also disturbed at seeing the skin get all meshed up! It’s definitely not for the faint of heart. Kudos to these amazing healthcare teams and best of luck to anyone who ever needs skin graphs!

My dad got a skin graft when he had an accident as his job. He would clear out trees to prep for construction. A tree fell on his leg and hos leg was dangling by tendons! They were able to save his leg but he had a few surgeries. He has part of his muscle missing but overall looks good considering what most skin grafts look like.

my pop has this but on his armpit area from almost getting his arm completely pulled off, i thank god he is alive and still has his arm, he got a skin graft as well as a muscle one too, they got the main vein from his thigh and then using my dads back muscle they lifted it and created a flap basically so my pop can raise his arm. I thank god for surgeon's and doctors alike for i am always grateful for those who wish to save lifes and also thanks to advanced technology as well
