The science of skin - Emma Bryce

Between you and the rest of the world lies an interface that makes up 16% of your physical weight. This is your skin, the largest organ in your body: laid out flat, it would cover close to 1.7 square metres of ground. But besides keeping your organs in, what is its purpose? Emma Bryce takes us into the integumentary system to find out.

Lesson by Emma Bryce, animation by Augenblick Studios.

Wait... So if I skin myself I'll weigh about 12kg less?

Sounds like a plan.

Thanks TedEd for providing free content for my anatomy and physiology class. I have no budget and no curriculum assistance from our district, so this is perfect!

Is anyone watching this and taking a moment to say thank you to ourselves? This is just our skin alone ...it doesn’t even go into all the other organs and their individual working intricacies...

I’m always so in awe of, what we can naturally do! It is a shame that we forget that not only can we do all these things to stay alive but we are so biologically good at it we are not even in control for most of it ...it literally just happens, our bodies are so amazing that we must be mindful of how everyone of of us is a blessing and a master piece of Mother Nature.

Everything else we can do (talents and skills) and have (things we achieve in life) makes us all a little bit more extra ✨

These animated videos are so interesting and helpful. I use them with my 5th and 6th graders. The visuals make a great learning tool without making it childish for my class.

2.The video talks about the role of skin in the human body. The skin forms the basis of the integumentary system. It includes 3 layers: epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous tissue. The skin performs 3 main functions: protection, thermoregulation and receptor.Microorganisms living on the skin are also part of the skin's immune system. In conclusion, I would like to say that thanks
to the skin, we interact and feel connected with
the environment.

If the square shown in the diagram represents 1 square centimetre, that's a damn big thumb

Just finished watching the video, very impressive I must say. Emma Bryce explained the skin's three layers, how they regulate temperature, defend against germs, and process physical sensations.
Bryce also talked about the skin's immune system and how it detects harmful pathogens.
Bryce explained how the skin regulates our body temperature and how it adapts to different environments.
I think he did a great job of explaining everything in a way that was both informative and engaging.
