"We're like a little family here" *proceeds to describe the very high rate of people who have quit within a month*

This describes EVERY SINGLE HOSPITAL I have worked at. Literally walking down the hall to answer a call light thinking “this is like high school.”

I think I’ve unlocked a few new signs of a toxic environment.

1. On your first day multiple members of the staff pull you aside to tell you to get out as soon as possible and while you’re here, to avoid certain people.

2. Your boss periodically hyper focuses on one colleague, micromanaging them until they quit or are fired.

3. Turnover is insanely high

4. Ever 1-2 weeks you are given brand new responsibilities and you are constantly told you’re not meeting the standards of your position.

5. Management both micromanages you while telling you “I respect your professional expertise to get this done”

I finally don't have a job that fits any of these criteria 🎉

A “mentor“ screamed at me. I asked administration for the contact information for our HR so that I could file a complaint. I was told emphatically that we “did not have HR“ and the three admin just “wore many hats“. They then held a meeting to explain why it was my fault she was mad enough to scream at me. 🙃🙃

Walmart in a nutshell. My mental health improved after leaving.

My job ticks every. Single. Box. It’s a shame because I love the work itself, it’s fulfilling and a niche market but I gotta remind myself, there will be other jobs that I’ll enjoy.

The high school one...my last job had this super weird "tradition" of trying to couple everyone up. Grown men in their 30s and 40s would try to set up much younger employees with each other like a game. I walked in the new girl who was the right age for this guy that they try to set up every year and I instantly became their new target. It felt so creepy and predatory and manipulative and in the end I got hurt. Super toxic

My last job was exactly like this, I was so surprised when I got my current position, better pay, better hours, better environment, I like my coworkers and my job more as a whole!

Thank you for this confirmation. I’ve been crying every other day at work because EVERYTIME I bring up a issue, someone gets defensive and calls me entitled or manipulative. But I need the money. I’m so conflicted on what to do 😢

My job “has truly a toxic work culture” If only I could get out!! The insurance coverage is amazing and my husband is bed bound. I couldn’t keep him at home without this insurance support 😢 I just avoid coworkers and management as much as possible

6. They hold you to performance standards without disclosing them, and then only inform you of them when you aren't meeting them as a "warning"

I quit teaching for reason number 2. Every waking hour was stress about the job, and even a lot of my sleeping hours, too!

Oh my gosh this made me cry every box was ticked. I loved my job so much it truly was my life’s passion I got fired because I could no longer fulfill the required schedule. It was just too much as I’d watch others leave while the work was undone but we were required to finish said work before leaving. I finally stood up for myself and said I have to leave at this time every day. I was told to my face my the manager we’ll work it out you won’t be fired. She fired me 2 weeks later. I’d been working there for 10 years with zero disciplinary action and multiple excellent customer reviews. I was never one of the popular kids😓

For me the dread isn't the job it's my PTSD unrelated to the job. 😂 I'm in treatment but if I could afford to quit I wouldn't hesitate.

The only one that applies is the “it feels like High School” one. But I’m moving away in June so I can handle it til then.
