Hi, this is Max Tapper again for Howcast. Now what I'm going to show you to do today is a chest dip. Okay, now obviously by saying chest dip means there's another type of dip. Dips normally are done close to your body. For a chest dip, your hands need to be a little wider, your arms need to be coming from the outside in to the midline of your body. So this is what it's going to look like. Instead of a closed grip where you're coming forward, these are going to be out to the side. So your dip will look like this. Down, up, down, up. Now, very important again we're going to go onto our shoulders. The deeper the dip is, the more strain you're going to put on a shoulder. So, at this position of ninety degrees in your arm, you're doing a lot of work. The further down you go, the more stress of the shoulder. It may feel like you're doing more work, which you are but it's bad work. You do not need to put that stress on the shoulder. Focus everything on your chest, arms out to the side, come to the midline and you'll see a lot of different results.

He explains exactly what everyone needs to know so perfectly. I totally was caving my elbows inwards which put so much stress in my shoulders, no one ever mentioned they need to be outwards on the descend then bring elbows inwards at the top. When I focused on my elbows out and went for the descend, I felt all chest working. Thank you 😊

Max, I'm your great fan & love your videos but this one seems to be on the negative side. The reason being - *thumb rule in dips is you shouldn't flare your elbows* whatever dip it maybe. It puts a lot of pressure on your shoulders and in turn leads to impingement irrespective of whatever position you adapt. I've gone through very painful shoulder impingement due to elbow flaring. Then I've to go through rehab & adopt a right technique.

Discussed with some good personal trainers + internet research & adopted the following technique which was really effective & not prone to injury.

*The right technique is to tilt your body to little front ( 30-45 degree ) keeping the core engaged with feet locked*

Trust me I've been doing Chest, Tricep & Moving Dips for nearly for 4 years.

Should I really be leaning forward to hit my lower pec? I'm not that used to chest dips yet so I have a tendency to lose stability and straighten my body instead of leaning forward
