Chest workouts are a waste of time and effort...

... at least in the way that a lot of people do them by putting chest as the top priority in their bodybuilding plan and mindlessly cranking out set after set after set of a million different chest press and chest fly variations.

Don't make the mistake of thinking the pecs are this massive muscle group that require a ton of volume and that building a bigger chest is the ultimate key to an impressive physique.

The truth is that the pecs only contain slightly more total mass than the traps, the lats, even the triceps, and it's actually the delts that are the largest upper body muscle group and that'll probably play the most important role in giving you that stronger more muscular appearance.

By all means go and make those chest gains, but you really shouldn't need any more than 3-4 different chest exercises in your program at any one time and if you're truly lifting hard and progressively, around 10-12 total weekly sets should be sufficient as an upper volume limit in most cases.

I used to over emphasize chest years ago, and it caused my posture to go to shit, and my upper back to hurt.

Just bench and incline dumbbell is more than enough for me. Maybe cable flies if I'm feeling adventurous

Focusing on shoulder training took my physique from looking like an average gym bro to looking like an actual bodybuilder. I am shocked how much more mass my arms have from just shoulder training. Rear delts and side delts are SOOO underrated and overlooked from a mass and aesthetic standpoint.

Brad Schoefeld ran a study and they said that triceps actually have more muscle volume than the pecs!

flat press, incline press, flys. 2x week. that's what I've been doing variations of for years now.

NOTES:

Unless you're an advanced lifter where chest is a specific weak point, there's just no good reason to prioritize chest training over other areas like so many people do.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Not only can this actually result in worse chest growth if you get carried away with the total volume/frequency, but if it also leads to subpar focus on other areas then your physique as a whole will suffer too.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Just train your entire body with equal effort and consistency, and once you have a solid foundation in place you can fine-tune things later on based on your goals and preferences.⁣⁣

P.S. Volume is a tricky subject because it depends on so many factors.

I'm not saying everyone should do 10-12 sets per week for chest - I'm saying you shouldn't require any more than that as an upper limit assuming you're truly training hard.

If you're going *very close* (or all the way to failure) then even half that amount can work.

And if you're training further away from failure (more than 2 reps in reserve) then I have no idea how many sets you should do since it all depends just how far away you are.⁣

P.S.S. The pecs, traps, lats and triceps are all similar in terms of their total mass, at least in untrained subjects. As far as I'm aware the pecs are on average very slightly bigger, but there could be some variance there. Bottom line is they're all very close.⁣

I hate that chest and biceps is over romanticized in the u.s. All i ever see people do on the dual cables is chest one after another nonstop

Yeah, but while the pecs don't take up as mich mass as the shoulders, they appear larger because they are together and connect the delts.

The delts also get a lot of work during chest training and are easier to isolate than the pecs, so I think prioritizing chest training is fine as long as you don't ignore your side and rear delts.

Build shoulders, traps, and forearms and you'll look YAKKED
Weird how Arnold just ended up creating such a fixation on chest and bi's

Pro tip: training and developing your lower and middle traps will create the illusion of a bigger chest. Also, you will have healthier shoulders.

this is why every gym bro who was a 'highschool athlete' can roll into the gym and bench a decent amount but not do anything else
