Red flags to look for when hiring a Handyman

Hey guys on this weeks edition of BS with AJ I have a special guest who owns a local business and he contacted me because he wanted to tell you about red flags to look for when hiring a handyman / contractor.
His name is Brandon Boss and his business is called Boss Services he does Flooring, painting, moving, yard work, building and more! His number is 270-970-3006
The first thing we talked about was just to do some basic research of the job to get an idea of what to look for when he comes to look at the job. I gave a breif story about a guy trying to take advantage of a lady because she couldn't get under the house and look at it herself. And a dead give away that he was trying to take advantage of her was the price. He said he could replace her entire duct system for $700, Now if you do just a little research on how much it will cost to do something like that you will know that you cant even buy the material for the job for $700.
Bringing proper tools is another thing to look out for, if they show up to do a job and only have a hammer and a bucket and you know they need certain tools to do the job right then you know right away that they are not the contractor for you. so again basic research will help you out alot.
Be sure they have references, and actually check into them. unless they are young and just getting started they should have some references that you can contact. If they are young and just getting into the business maybe call their family members to get an idea of how competent they are to do the job.
Appearances are also important. If they come in to look at a job in ragged clothes or he looks like he might be into something that he shouldn't be, maybe think about going a different direction. Now on the other hand If he is coming to work under your house or to paint or something like that he will probably show up in old clothes because he doesn't want to ruin good clothes.
If the contractor is rude or being really difficult to deal with, maybe they are a bit too pushy maybe go a different direction. Some things its ok for them to push, for instance if your trying to do a job for as cheap as possible and you told them to do it a certain way and they refuse because it wont work, or it wont hold up as long. you do have to remember that its their name on the line, and they don't want to do a bad job because it will cost them future jobs.
If you have a lot of trouble trying to get them to come out to look at your job. If you cant get them to come out to bid the job imagine how hard it will be to get them to come do the actual work.
If they are too cheap or too expensive. you really need to find someone who is close to the middle of the road. its not a bad idea to have a couple people bid on the job to see what kind of range the cost will be.
If they only accept cash, that's a bad sign. If they cant take a check it says they are either trying to hid the money coming in or they don't have a bank account. And neither is very good. What kind of grown person doesn't have an account to at least cash checks if they own a business.
In conclusion do a bit of research before you call someone in to know what to look for, ask for references, appearances do matter, they shouldn't be too rude or pushy, get more than one quote, and make sure they aren't wayy cheaper than everyone else.
One red flag doesn't have to mean abort mission, but if you see 2 or more then you may want to rethink hiring this guy/ company to do your job.

This is cool AJ, it relates to dealing with contractors all over the world mate & unless you can do some things on your own then it’s worthwhile knowing the facts about those you hire 👍👍👍👍

Great video/information! As a handyman, I never ask for money up front . . . If the materials are too costly for me to purchase, I will ask my customer to order the materials and pay for them. If free delivery is available, that's what we do; otherwise I will pick up the order and deliver materials to the job site immediately.

If you have to hire a crew, you are not a handyman... your crew is. You're just a manager. A true handyman will do all labor themselves, one job at a time. Beware of "professionals" showing up, giving a price, then having crews come in to do their work. You are just one of multiple customers vying for their time and you will not be getting the quality of work you deserve. When working alone, my quality is higher, customers know I am personally invested in their job, and because I only work one job at a time, I still get through quicker than a fancy company with a crew. That lets me gain customers completely by word of mouth. That also means my customers are pre-qualified, and I don't have to worry about them shucking and jiving me, because bad people can come from both sides.

Great video! When I was putting in floating floors the guy who put them in offered a job discount if I let buy flooring from Costco because it was better quality than the stuff I wanted. Well… I didn’t listen and went with what I wanted and it’s held up pretty good but I always kick myself for not listening to him. Great point!
