Those he FOREKNEW he also predestined, therefore it is a choice that one makes to follow (and continue to follow Christ). Jesus talks a lot about people who think they’re Christians, but are not. He talks about the salt losing its saltiness, the light put under a bowl, the people who say to him “Lord Lord” but he casts away from him, the man in the parable of the talents who buries his talent in the ground, the man in the parable of the wedding banquet who shows up without wedding clothes on, etc. Only he who does the will of my father…

It’s not a matter of “losing” your salvation. It’s a question of did you really ever have it in the first place?

Also, it should be noted that a Christian who sins is much different from a Christian who has fallen away. To fall away is to walk away in the other direction. Sinning is not turning away. It is simply stumbling along the way you are already going. Paul’s words of encouragement are for those who continue to follow, yet stumble along the way. He is NOT saying that you can go to Church Camp your sophomore year in high school and accept Jesus into your heart and then walk away from it a week later and expect to have salvation.

John Piper is absolutely right that Gal 5:4 in no way shows that regenerate Christians can lose salvation. We need to beware of taking statements like the one in this verse too literally and technically.

A close translation of the Greek of this verse is:

'You are severed from Christ, you who are justified by the law; you have fallen from grace.'

The ESV has 'you who WOULD BE justified by the law', but the Greek actually just says 'you who ARE justified by the law'.

However, there is no way that Paul believed that anyone could actually be justified by the law. So his words in this clause are obviously not meant to be taken literally. And if we are not going to take this clause literally, there is no need to take the other clauses in the verse literally either.

Paul speaks AS IF people who profess faith in Christ and are then justified by the law have fallen away from salvation. But there is no need at all to think that Paul thought this was actually possible. He is speaking in a colourful way to highlight that salvation through faith and salvation through law keeping are mutually exclusive.

Can anyone help me understand the hate John Piper has for a single man? A man so offensive that he said “Christians communicate a falsehood to unbelievers…when we act as if policies and laws that protect life and freedom are more precious than being a certain kind of person.”

Does anybody out there realize what Piper is saying? He is saying that life itself must take a back seat to being anti-Trump!

And certainly not Piper’s life. Piper was referring to the lives of the millions of children in the very womb of their mothers. Lives that he thinks are disposable as long as Trump is hated.

I simply cannot even begin to grasp the hate that resides in his soul, or his popularity.
